Im not interested in making the case for the game as it exists now; baseball is long past the point of any sort of viable long-term argument. What interested me this morning was the thought of baseball, even if it was just a pastime. Its the first time Ive seriously considered the game as a pastime since I watched a baseball game at Fenway Park in 1995. The stadium and the game, even in a city whose love of baseball is not well-known and even in a city whose team never won the World Series, was magical.
My favorite memories are few but the Fenway experience is near the top. I have a memory of sitting in a bar, watching the game and being with people who were part of the baseball tradition. Watching my home team win. It was a good time. Baseball was fun when it was a pastime. Sure, the games themselves can be painful, even in the short term, and even some of the more recent games have not been the best product on the field (if I could make the case for any sport at all to be watched on television right now, I would make it golf). But I do love that baseball is something that my grandparents love; that my dad loves; that Ive loved in a real, meaningful way since I was a boy. It makes me feel connected. It makes me feel like I could take a baseball, or a bat, or a ball, and go somewhere Ive never been, and watch a game that Ive never been to. Im pretty sure that baseball is even the only thing that can make me feel like Im at Fenway Park, which is just fine by me. --- All Hail the Ticket Oak. All Hail the Ticket Oak. ... I don't really look at baseball as a real sport. 90% of the time the players are literally just standing in one place.

probably why I played basketball as a kid. something was always going on, and you were ALWAYS moving.
baseball to me seemed to be a sport geared towards people to "watch" and "pass the time" on a weekend afternoon at the park or something. not really "get into". btw I heard some soaring schmaltzy John Williams music playing in my head when reading the o.p. ... Copied to Clipboard!
