Other way around. The longer the show, the dumber everyone else in the police dept became. All the times he snuck in forensics or evidence and NO ONE gave a second thought what his reason was a non-detective lol.

Or maybe Miami PD being fucking incompetent was the joke.

That's like the entire trope of Dexter (especially in the books). He views himself as some sort of master (narcissism), but most often just lucks out of situations.
