I don't particularly like Dane Cooks comedy, but his story is really sad. He worked really hard and his brother stole nearly all his money.
https://youtu.be/mE2i3PlTsvs

As for the question at hand, I've never been a fan of Seth Rogen, Seinfeld, or Andy Dick. There are also a lot of unfunny female comedians. There are a couple that are really great at being funny, but I couldn't name them as its been forever since I've seen them on tv. There was this one female from New York who played at Club 54, her name escapes me but she lit a cigarette on stage to get back at the then recent in building smoking ban and went on to have a 5 minute hilarious set.

Stand-up comedy in general, especially the American kind. It's generally just random jokes about sexes and ethnicity, told very simply and slowly, especially due to all the excessive cheering and clapping after every other sentence.
Personally I prefer cabaret.

There was a period in time where all the Comedy Central Roast guests were getting regular specials and most of them sucked (the roasts themselves were hit or miss) but Jeff Ross and Lisa Lampanelli in particular were awful.

Dane Cook is another one I never really got into, although Im pretty sure popular consensus has shifted to saying he sucked, back in the early to mid 2000s he was fucking everywhere.

Id say the majority of comedians who made it big through Comedy Central at that time were either terrible, or had one decent special and then got a contract for like three more specials and didnt have the material to do that so the quality of their material went completely down the drain. Your Jeff Dunham, Carlos Mencia, the Blue Collar Comedy guys, Dimitri Martin the list goes on.

Id put him in the latter category of people who had a good first special and then got milked too hard. His first special was great but they made him pump out more, and then do that awful show? I havent caught his recent stuff but its good to hear hes putting out good quality material.

Boomer comedians like Jerry Seinfeld ain't really my thing. I acknowledge he's good at the craft, but I don't gravitate to it. Seinfeld is still a GOAT show.

For older comics, I usually say George Carlin is the best. Richard Pryor too. Otherwise, I'm gravitating towards cringy s*** like Andrew Dice Clay or Sam Kinison or Rodney Dangerfield. I also don't mind Bill Hicks. But I don't foresee myself going out of my way to look at the old clean material by Tim Allen or Jay Leno or Dave Letterman who were all supposedly very good in their day.

There are plenty of trendy comics from today that I just have no interest in seeing. I liked Amy Schumer for a second. I could care less now. Aziz Ansari doesn't really hold my interest. Hannah Gadsby is REDACTED. Kevin Hart is fine but I'm not wowed by him.

One industry darling I really like and stands up to the hype is Sebastian Maniscalco. That dude is a machine. Effing hilarious.

Also, Joe Rogan's standup is pretty mediocre compared to his stature in the comedy world. I didn't mind his last special but the ones before that were very meh. He's got guys in his circle (Tom Segura, Ari Shaffir) that blow him away. Not to mention adjacent east coast guys like Bill Burr who's just the GOAT of our time possibly.

Rogan's standup and sense of humour is very mechanical compared to a lot of comics out there. Those guys possess funny in them that Joe does not. It's all natural.

I think even many of today's comics would still praise what he did back in the day with his 2 specials. But they didn't necessarily age the best. But fact is, to have 2 specials at his age and at that time and place is an amazing feat.

Seriously though, comedy-wise, you're better off listening to club level comedy rather than ~99% of the big industry promoted stuff. I'm talking guys like Mark Normand, Joe List, Shane Gillis, Sam Morrill, Dan Soder, Big Jay Oakerson, Dave Attell. Several of these guys uploaded their specials onto Youtube for free.

This post right here is mostly a comment on the podcast scenes. I am always mildly annoyed at how much bigger the followings are for the LA-based stuff than for the NY comedy podcast scene. NY in general just goes plain HARDER in the comedy department. Some of it is over the top and cringe, but in general, they're a funnier crop of comics than LA. Bar none. LA has a few guys that are independently great like Bill Burr, but the 'Rogan bro clique' is baffling to me.

The west coast especially feels like a giant grift by fat guys in hoodies to sell hoodies and other merch to fools on the internet. I'm talking namely the Rogan spinoff guys like Brendan Schaub and Bobby Lee and Chris D'Elia and several others. These accounts on Youtube pull in 100s of thousands of subs and they are 10% as funny as any of the east coast NY / Boston / Philly guys.

He's the guy yes. His comments weren't very good, but he isn't a racist. The comments just look much worse than they are out of context, when in reality they were just stupid throwaway lines in passing. He's more than proved himself since then as a funny guy. I don't think it's right to end the guy over stuff he said while living in a Philly basement and making little money. His new special has 2 million views on Youtube. His sketch show Gilly and Keeves blows away most anything SNL is doing.

And for the record, he tells the story several times (on Rogan and elsewhere), but Lorne Michaels really tried to save his ass behind the scenes. It was the lawyers and corporations that really caused the firing.

I love George Carlin's work from beginning to end, but I can understand why people don't like him. I'd say to try his early stuff out though as it's more comedy proper than what came after.

Yeah, Seinfeld is only good on Seinfeld and I was glad when they stopped doing the stand up bits before and after each episode. Only laughed a couple of times at any of his standup. One was his bir about one guy working on something while a bunch of other guys stand around just watching.
