I received a work call from an Alzheimer's unit at an assisted living facility. There was a woman in the background repeating a name over and over again. Finally, a nurse (not the one I was speaking to) uttered "Shut up, he's dead" in frustration.

There's no telling how long the woman with Alzheimer's had been repeating that name. But seriously, a nurse is going to talk like that to a patient? Had the nurse who said that been the one I was speaking to, I would have reported her.

So many people must go into that field thinking it is a do nothing job. Every nursing home ive ever set foot in is full of people that look like they dont want to be there and are just assholes in general.

Having a nanny cam in every room should be the standard practice, and abusers should be sentenced as harshly as possible.

Unless you work at a Nursing home I'd probably shut up in this topic.

A long way to explain but it's amazing there aren't more stories of Nurses murdering patients.

When my dad was in palliative care, there was a nurse who would be needlessly rough with him, to the point where she fractured one of the bones in his arm. He had many, many tumours through his bones, to the point where there pretty much wasnt an arm or leg that wasnt at least slightly fractured. Shed also treat him like he was a dementia patient, even though he wasnt.

She was someone who absolutely should not have been allowed within 100 metres of a hospital or any healthcare setting, but I dont judge every nurse by her actions. That would be really fucking silly. Most do the best they can given often pretty horrible working conditions.

Eh, sounds kind of messed up but I wouldn't judge. I don't do that job, have no idea what it truly entails and what they go through. Maybe that nurse was at the end of their rope.

So because a patient has Alzheimer's means that no one can tell them to shut up? Even in GameFAQs it's not moddable to tell someone to shut the fuck up and yet you want to report and get someone fired over it? Grow up

My dad was head of maintenance for a local home. And the nurses there were, well, cruel. Save for a few.

Though, this seems to be a nursing home specific issue. He was also director of maintenance for a hospital as well, and the nurses there were never short of the sweetest people you'd meet.

Makes you think...

I was on the phone for another four minutes or so and the patient continued to call the deceased person's name. It didn't make her stop.

Obviously youre not supposed to treat patients like that, but there are some people who will repeat the same thing literally constantly and it gets annoying as fuck listening to for 8 hours in a row every day

Is it awful? Yes. Should you be surprised? No. It's a career field you get into by going to for-profit colleges that advertise themselves on commercial breaks during Maury. Can't expect too much.

As a nurse who has worked in a nursing home, it is very easy to get burned out.

I was the only nurse most days on a floor of 60 patients. That means I had to pass medications to 60 patients, do tube feedings, dress wounds, help with meals, answer phones and other administrative tasks. Just me and at most 2 aides. Most nurses get upset when anything out of the ordinary happens because there are time sensitive things (like administering insulin) that absolutely can't be delayed. Being overworked does not excuse any form of abuse, but people are quick to shit on nurses.

Unless you've worked in the same field or have been in it first hand I would withhold judgement. It isn't easy treating patients with neuro disorders. Sometimes they can be mean but you can't hold it against them because that's the disorder doing that, not actually them. It's easy to say just treat them nicely, but when you've been punched, slapped, or spit on by a variety of patients, your patience might be thin that day. Not saying it's ok to be verbally abusive, but hey if you can't fault the patient that just punched you, what are you supposed to do? You're stuck there for 8 or 12 hours, just got punched, or spit on, or sexually harassed for the 2nd or third time of the shift and you're short staffed so you can't realistically leave for a break and vent.

Be appreciative of your healthcare workers. It isn't easy doing it. There can be people that aren't a right fit for the job, but there are genuine healthcare workers who try their best and need a bit of appreciation to continue going on. You may have caught them on a bad day.

Not gonna judge the nurse over this. They probably get subjected to much worse on a regular basis especially if they're treating dementia patients.

Yeah I've worked in one

Genuinely one of the hardest jobs on the planet. Anyone can be broken by the situation. It's still wrong to lash out of course, but the nurses get insulted by the residents on a daily basis.

I raised my voice a few times, usually after I got punched or bitten or something though. I generally could laugh off the situations like this

A lot of the fault is on the management for understaffing in the name of profit
