CD Projekt says its GOG games storefront will put more focus on offering a handpicked selection of games and transfer some developers to other projects, following ongoing financial losses at the division.
Regarding GOG, its performance does present a challenge, and recently weve taken measures to improve its financial standing, CD Projekt CFO Piotr Nielubowicz told investors on a quarterly earnings call. First and foremost, weve decided that GOG should focus more on its core business activity, which means offering a handpicked selection of games with its unique DRM-free philosophy. In line with this approach, there will be changes in the team structure.
GOG SHOULD FOCUS MORE ON ITS CORE BUSINESS ACTIVITY, WHICH MEANS OFFERING A HANDPICKED SELECTION OF GAMES
Nielubowicz said that some developers whod been working on GOGs online solutions will be transferred from the project. At the end of 2021, GOG is also leaving the Gwent consortium, a cross-division project related to CD Projekts The Witcher card game Gwent. This means it wont bear any development costs or share any profits from the development consortium. CD Projekt previously called Gwent the most important project of 2017 in the GOG.com segment.

These latest statements came after disappointing financial results for GOG. The storefront saw a slight increase in revenue but a net loss of around $1.14 million in the last financial quarter. Overall, its lost about $2.21 million over the past three quarters compared to a $1.37 million profit over the same period in 2020. CD Projekt didnt immediately reply to questions about how its new strategy might translate into changes to GOGs features or catalog.

I wonder if GOG will end up surviving the decade. I don't know what else they can do to be relevant. I doubt less games will work.

Well, the great thing about the service is, you can download the games DRM free :)

So you're safe even if it goes down, provided you back up

Think this is affected by Cyberpunk 2077?

Eh sorta. A more popular CP2077 would have helped like The Witcher 3 did but GOG needs more than just the odd blockbuster every few years. Especially since those games can also be bought on Steam.

It'll be a sad day if GOG goes under because it's not like CDPR made a killing off fucking over consumers with DRM and arbitrary refund policies unlike some other notable greedy companies with shitty ass launchers.

That's too bad

GOG has had better sales than Steam in recent years

The gog app is one of the worst gaming apps I have ever encountered. I tried to use it to play Jade Empire and it wouldn't even launch. I had to find the actual game launcher in the files to bypass the app

Wouldn't surprise me if Microsoft buys it. They definitely want a better PC store.

I bet they constantly give Gaben offers to buy Valve and Steam.

They need to go back to procuring the classics. Where's stuff like Black & White, No One Live Forever, Oni, Mechwarrior, etc.?

No One Lives Forever is stuck in rights hell unfortunately. GOG and Nightdive have both tried.

https://www.thegamer.com/no-one-lives-forever-the-operative-legal-issues-explained/

Basically Activision, Warner Bros and Fox/Disney don't know who currently own the rights. They all potentially could. None of them care enough to find out but they care enough to log an opposition to anyone who attempts to use the license.

Any day now. Xbox will announce their acquisition of CD Projekt. Just you see.

Would microsoft want to acquire CDPR? They've so far only had the one hit wonder. Cyberpunk was the make or break game and they absolutely ruined the chance to solidify their stance in the industry by going after the quick money.

GoG is good for old classic pc games. But I have never bothered with them for anything modern. They should have just stuck with the old games. Sounds like making Cyberpunk was their undoing
