Metal Gear Solid 3 - Camo Index

ideally, it was so the player could choose a good enough outfit and face paint combo, which would allow them to not be immediately seen by the enemy.

but for a lot of players, it turned out to be them constantly going to the menu to change their outfit and/or face paint whenever the color of the environment changed even a little.

it definitely wasn't great for the flow of gameplay.

I've heard some people complain about the eating/healing system, but I liked it - it felt more immersive than just eating rations to heal.

maybe I'm remembering incorrectly since I haven't followed the game, or the community, in a while, but I thought some people complained about that part of the game (maybe it was the healing part; idk).

There's a DS game called Contact that has a pretty arbitrary eating system. You basically have to wait crazy long for your food to digest, which means if you are low on health, you can only eat what you have room in your stomach for. Basically a time tax for the sake of novelty.

The battle system sucks too, which is a shame because it has a cool story and an incredible art style.

I've seen people complain as well. Less like saying it's horrible and more finding it pointless or not well executed.

I feel like in general the ability to grind is a bad idea imo, unless theres a caveat so you cant just kill the same enemy over and over and get stronger.

yeah it gets weird changing outfits every time i get to a new area, mgsv's one outfit for the rest of the mission is great but sadly the areas for the camo index became 'linear' and we didn't get to have more interior building sneaking feels

^ yea, that's how I feel, with MGSV included.

I wouldn't say that.

as gamers, we're primed to maximize our play styles, and having a camo index of 80%+ is gonna be more attractive than having one at 60%.

The issue in MGSV is that the sneaking suit's silent footsteps far outweighs camo use, and even then it's good camo at night too

tbh, based on how I played the game, I never used the sneaking suit, so I never noticed.

That's fair, being able to run laps in a base without being heard is crazy tho, definitely opens a lot of options up to the player.

Goddamn that game is so fucking good, and now the license and engine are stuck behind a company that refuses to make games anymore >:(

Genuinely thought your complaint with the camo in MGS3 is that it didn't matter at all. You could just put on standard camo and it would work everywhere.
I don't think I've ever touched that menu outside of the tutorial section where they make you do it.
Same with the medical stuff. I think I've used it once in dozens of playthroughs.

As much as I enjoyed Mafia 3, the consigliere missions where you take over turf from local gangbangers were a huge letdown. You're basically doing these repetitious time-wasters against mooks and then handing territory over to your subordinate as a way to do the -- let's face the facts -- pretty kickass story missions. I distinctly remember being able to kill enemies by whistling/luring through walls, which was just a silly way to break the meager difficulty. There had to be a better way of divvying up the enemy neighborhoods without becoming...whatever this was.

Other than that, though, Mafia 3 delivered the goods. Great soundtrack, fun characters (especially that FBI dude), decent villains, pretty enjoyable dialogue... It's just the in-betweener missions that make you roll your eyes. Dunno how the DLC is, but I heard it was up to snuff, so that's another thing in its favor.

Doesn't the game force you to use the medical system on multiple occasions?

Maybe. I only remember the one during the tutorial.

Shogun 2 is the best game in the Total War franchise, but by the spirits did I hate the Realm Divide mechanic.

Was decent in Fall of the Samurai, though, since it was only half the map ganging up on you instead of literally everyone.

The problem with the Camo Index is that it changes based on the surface you're on, so it can change dozens of time per area. It should have just been biome-based; e.g, if you're in the jungle, jungle camo works, regardless of whether you're on mud or grass or water.

OR, as mentioned, it should be like MGSV, where you can only change camo at fixed points.

They went so far into realism that it became unrealistic.
