I think even allowing a second offense is lenient.

License revoked permanently after you do it once.

So what should the punishment be for someone caught driving after their license is revoked?

People make mistakes and addiction is real.

First offense? Fines, community service, license revoked for 6 months.

After that, much harsher.

First offense should be mandatory suspended license until you complete a safety course, pay a fine, etc.

Second offense should be a permanent suspension of your license, no ifs, ands, or buts. Drunk driving is extremely dangerous.

Also, if you cause an accident while drunk, you should at least get a vehicular assault charge. And at minimum a 2nd degree murder charge if somebody dies.

Also after first offense you should be forced to watch a drunk driving accident compilation.

Dead bodies and everything. See it with your own eyes.

Seems fair. For a lot of people suspending their license means they lose their job or have to take extraordinary measures to commute to work. Suspending a license shouldnt be part of a first offense.

But, the idea is to get someone to not drink so irresponsibly.

I agree with this if no death is involved. If someone dies, yeah punish them with jail time. I'd also add a class to the first offense that they have to pass.

This

DUI is disgusting but as people have said, addiction is real and some people make genuine mistakes under the influence and the social net around them can fail.

I also hate to say that I knew a guy who would kill a bottle of E&J with me and I actually trusted his driving in that state. Stupid yes, but I've driven with sober people I trusted less

First offense: five years suspended sentence and 300 hours community service. Any offenses after that will result in prison time.

Second offense: ten years prison, permanent license revocation.

No more games. People won't learn, so they have to be removed from society.

Lots of punishments for crimes are serious repurcussions that have a permanent effect on your life. I don't know why this should be treated any differently.

First offense: We drown them
Second offense: They lose their license for life

how you gonna take their license if theyre already drowned?

I didnt say you leave them dead!

Third offense: We drown them and leave them dead.

Im all for having a special mark put on IDs to prevent them from legally buying alcohol on their liscense/ID. Sure aint gonna stop everyone but it will be another difficulty added to their life. Should at least slow down their ability to drink at bars/clubs which is probably a good chunk of drunk drivers. Heck id be down for they aint allowed in clubs or bars.

And that's just a add on to what we already do to them.

To me being drunk or high should never be an excuse to a crime it should make the punishment worse. I say that as someone who drinks frequently and has done drugs. Mandatory rehab should be a thing too though.

License taken away permanently. If you can't be responsible enough to not drink and drive, you shouldn't have a license.

I agree with taking it away but not permanently for a first offence. Something like a 2 year ban seems more appropriate.

forced rehab. you start taking licenses away and all you're going to do is worsen the problem, since you're fucking up their ability to work a stable job and pushing them to more risky behavior to avoid the cops. put a blood-alcohol tester in the car and make them blow before they can turn it on.

Extreme DUI driving 70 mph vs guy pulled over for taillight out and is under or near the limit are different circumstances. Either way penalties should be harsh but having a set penalty wouldn't be punishing the more dangerous offenders. Some people just shouldn't be allowed to drive imo
