They didn't say either. Nobody in actual BC times ever said BC. They had a different calender then. It depended on where you were in the world but in Roman Empire, they had a calender based on the legendary founding date of Rome. The BC/AD system came about after the BC years were already past. They were just retroactively named

"AD" wasn't even used until the year 525, and didn't become popular until the 8th century.

You can go into a Wikipedia rabbit hole of looking at calendars/timekeeping throughout history if you want, it's somewhat interesting. The West is currently indebted to Roman timekeeping, adjusted slightly over time to be more accurate. With the Muslim calendar being a definitive side option.
