So Walt put the plate back together to figure out Krazy-8 took a rather large piece. Walt then decided he had to kill him.

But...did Krazy-8 really take it just to kill him and Jesse the moment he got free? Or did he grab it purely out of self-defense, given how he was locked up in a basement?

I don't think Jesse was in his immediate radar because he hadn't seen him for a while at that point, but my memory is fuzzy. He wanted to kill Walt, get the key, and get the fuck out of dodge. If anyone else in the building who wanted to keep him hostage he'd fight them, sure, but the solo goal was Walt -> Escape.

He took it because at that point he knew his life was in danger. He knew if he kept humanizing himself to Walt, Walt might get close and he could try to stab him and break out.

The thing with Breaking Bad is that a lot of things are up to interpretation and left intentionally ambiguous.

He was literally grabbing the piece of plate when he was going to unlock him...
