Heard the game was by platinum, not square enix so I decided to try it. What's the story behind these games?

The combat was very fast and felt cool but I didn't really know what I was doing. It certainly didn't feel like metal gear rising raiden reveangence or anything like that.

Is the entire game's aesthetic taking place in some junkyard/ruined looking factory? I didn't really like it too much, reminded me of enslaved odyssey to the west

there are also forest, beach, and desert areas

anyway, the game has a lot of surprises, to different gameplay mechanics/modes, perspectives, and so on.

so I wouldn't write it off.

You have to keep in mind that it is a JRPG first and a hack 'n slash second, so I can imagine the combat feels very different compared to MGR or Bayonetta.

And the story unfolds as you play the game and you have to finish the story 3 times to get it all, but each playthrough is different and even has you play as a different character. And there are more areas/scenes to explore.

Yeah the demo gave me no context of what the heck I was playing or what this game is about or anything like that. But I got the vibe that there's some post-apocalyptic shenanigans, and I immediately liked the 2 characters and robot helper that I did see.

I haven't played a platinum game where I didn't like the characters and overall voice acting/story/ambience

See the thing is the boss of the demo ended with what seemed like robot mecha armor gameplay so need to know if it's gonna be like that since I'm not a fan of robot armor gameplay

No, the game doesn't evolve into you piloting mechs and most bosses are regular sized in comparison. There are flight segments like you saw in the demo but that's as close as you get to piloting a robot.

If you want the basic outline of the plot without any real spoilers, you're an Android sent to Earth on behalf of humans who have fled the planet to fight and kill robots sent by aliens that invaded the planet. There's... A lot more going on than that but that is the premise of the world you're being placed into.

The game is quite a bit easier then those other titles. If you're concerned about difficulty you can set the game to easy and that lets you equip special chips that will do things like automatically fire your pod for you. There are also chips that will automatically heal you when you get below a certain percentage such that it becomes fairly difficult to actually die in the game.

But unlike those other games, because there is a leveling system if you're finding a section too hard you can actually go and grind up levels and equipment to come back stronger.

The game is pretty easy aside from certain side quests, assuming you play on normal. That said, it's still fun to play around with different move sets.

It is a pretty unique game that is probably not for everybody. Unfortunately, I don't think the first couple hours are a good way to determine if you'll like it or not.

I definitely think it's a solid game with interesting ideas, and one that will probably work playing to stay up to date in video game narrative discussions (if you participate in that kind of thing).

It's still a spectacle action game, but there is an equipment system with weapon upgrades and character levels with stats. So there are definitely situations where you can offset player's skill with grinding.

One thing that makes it feel different from other games in the genre is that platinum made the decision to make dodging possible at any point. So where in some games there's high-risk high-reward for using a bigger, slower weapon, in nier if you're halfway through a swing and it looks like you're going to hit you can just mash dodge. The end result is you spend a lot more time dashing and weaving around enemies than you do in extended combos which might be why it feels slightly off compared to something like Bayonetta.

Oh there's a leveling system, that must be why the other guy said it was like a jrpg. So like, stat growth for level ups and stuff like that?

If it's easier than their previous titles that sounds promising. I might need to check out gameplay tutorials because the other games felt a lot more intuitive than this one. She feels simultaneously fast when on the field and yet not fast enough when I'm in combat.

3 times is all you need. A, then B, the C and D which happens simultaneously, with E being and epilogue, sort of.

By grinding, so you get experience points from fighting those robot enemies, just like an action rpg?

Yeah, you have character levels and there's also a blacksmith where you can upgrade your weapon levels.

The big unique system in the game, though, is the chip system which exist in the demo but the game doesn't really highlight. That's where all the cool stuff is that lets you do things like at ranged attacks to your sword swings, give yourself invincibility after getting hit, a witch time effect when you perfect Dodge, get life leech, make enemies explode when you kill them, etc.

You can find chips in + 1 up to + 10 varieties and the more powerful the chip the more space it takes up. You have a limited amount of space to equip whatever you want which really makes for some cool customization. If you want it to, you can even unequip your heads up display to make more room for attack chips.

Chips can also be fused to make higher-level chips.

Yes, you get experience points and they will also drop items and equipment. The items get used for upgrading weapons, and the equipment takes the form of chips.

I only played a fraction of the game, but the enemies have an extremely interesting and mysterious story to them. I actually really fucked up by getting distracted and need to get back to it. I also played it on Hard to have a good challenge and it took me forever to get through the first hour, because that's the only part so far with no checkpoints and you have no equipment boosts yet. But my drive to beat the prologue was on some new to Dark Souls shit. Then I did really good with pacing.

Quite honestly, I got bored of the combat midway through and set the difficulty to easy, lol. The gameplay didn't really engage me, and I knew about the B scenario going in, so I was eager to move along.

However, even despite that it's a really unique game and definitely worth finishing. The story goes to some crazy places, and it's the kind of that make you think about it after the fact. The less you know the better, so I won't spoil how.

Not sure why people fooled themselves into thinking the story is good. It starts really strong but never pays off and gets totally nonsensical near the end. The gameplay is fun, but extremely easy, and hard mode is stupid because it increases the damage you take but not enemy health so it's kind of pointless. The OST is amazing though, definitely the best part of the game.
