In theory, a certain amount of gatekeeping would only enhance the community by keeping the community well moderated and devolving into a dumpster fire (see: My Little Pony and Steven Universe and other children's shows neckbeards obsess over).

I mean, yes and no. What do you mean though? Lack of a reason to let them join is basically the same as having no reason to exclude them. If peoe don't add anything, but otherwise are 'fine', there might be gatekeeping

over recent years its become increasingly clear to me that you need to employ at least some gate keeping in communities and fandoms if you dont want to be pulled into one side or another of brain dead culture war shit

If you're gatekeeping people because they're genuinely awful people that are only around to cause grief and be overly negative people then that's fine but if you're gatekeeping people because they happen to be loud or annoying but genuinely like whatever they're a fan of then you're a dick.

There absolutely is such a thing as a fake fan, or someone who only likes something superficially. I'm not sure what to do with these people now that gatekeeping is out though.
