I played it before Melee came out

I have no clue how I wound up with it. Probably a Christmas gift but it doesn't stand out in Christmas memories. AFAIK it showed up one day.

Yep. I just remember seeing it on tv and thinking seeing Link, Mario and Pikachu fighting each other in the same game was insane and such a thing would probably end up only in Japan.

Who would have thought that Mario tripping Yoshi would lead to massive wars between dimensions, and between light and dark, and would cause guys like Sephiroth and Sora showing up?

Yes. My brother hated that I played it so much that he actually took the cartridge and hid it, lol. I loved trolling people with Jigglypuff, back when he was still a viable fighter. The Pokemon cameos in that game also got me interested in playing Pokemon R/B/Y.

Haha, for me it was the other way around. This was during the growing fad of Pokemania, and despite having previously played Mario, Yoshi, and Donkey Kong games, it was Pikachu being in that made me absolutely want to try it out.

At the time, I had no idea who Link, Samus, or Fox were. Same with Ness and I think Captain Falcon as well (can't recall if we played F-ZERO X before or after Smash), but kid me thought--knowing that the Polygon team corresponded to the playable characters--that Ness' Polygon was Wario and Falcon's was... Dragon from SNK's World Heroes (which we owned on SNES).

I used to own a copy. I sold it figuring I'd be able to buy it back someday. I regret it now. Those cartridges have appreciated in price.
