I thought about making this topic last night, but then I figured that 95% of us who care will have already heard about the new upload and I guess i just don't care enough about the other 5% to make the topic <_<

It seemed like more of a public service before his channel blew up, but now he's the gold standard in a genre he basically created himself with several other quality channels that produce similar content.

.

As far as this episode though I thought it was pretty great. I appreciated the emphasis on showcasing a runner who never held the top spot, but was clearly instrumental in driving the times down through competition.

not really, he covers many different aspects of speedrunning. i liked how the mario kart 64 video was about a runner who tried to hold all possible records in the game simultaneously (and never succeeded), for example.

maybe he does get a bit repetitive at times. i'd say he's done a little too much SMB1 (and this is coming from someone who has wasted tons of hours watching people run the game). overall, i think he's done a pretty good job of keeping it fresh so far, though.

(also, speedrunning itself is extremely repetitive too, so...)

really, the thing that bothers me the most about summong salt (and other youtube channels about speedrunning) is that the videos get dated pretty quickly.

the ninja gaiden video is less satisfying to watch when you know that arcus has now lost the WR to another runner >_>

I like his videos when they're something new, or showcase a lot of different technical tricks

Sometimes they're just a sequence of "this person got a score, then this person, then this person..."

I love how speedrunning combines the excitement of sudden innovation/breakthrough with the toil of repetitious work, and I think Salt's videos showcase both of those things very well.

For me I think he's too stubborn with the video format. Like, starting this one with slo-mo Wii Sports footage & the epic spacey music is kind of silly, just get right into it. I think as a whole they could be trimmed down a fair amount.

I actually love that. It adds a level of grandeur to accomplishments that should, at least in our small little niche, be celebrated. Geeky or not, relevant or not, these people are the best in the world at what they do.
