They provide housing to people who cant afford to buy a house yet. Theyre providing a service to people. They have to pay property taxes on the home theyre renting out, and perhaps the mortgage isnt even paid off yet. The average landlord is probably barely profiting.

Spider-Man didn't like his landlord very much in the Raimi movies.

Not all renters are unable to afford to buy, i rent because I like it and I dont have to do maintenance
