They need to be forced to change the name. It's obviously not full self driving so I have no idea why they are allowed to advertise it as that way.

It's definitely not good yet, which is why they're rolling it out so slowly in this phase.

People are meant to test it out and report errors so that they can improve it. They're releasing updates with improvements every two to three weeks.

I've seen it get better in the couple versions I've had. Still not great yet, though.

Having the car drive itself, at least once it's able to do it well, takes a lot of stress off of the drive.

When I first moved to San Antonio, I was making frequent trips back to Austin either to get more stuff from my old apartment or visit my mom. I'd be tired of driving every time I got back home to San Antonio. I've tried having the car drive itself the whole way on the highway a number of times now and I haven't had driver fatigue.

It's not self driving yet. The goal right now is to have people test it out so that they can improve it. The feature is better today than it was a month ago. It'll keep getting better as they release more updates.

I know but in the old country we used to have trams and such for people who don't want to drive.
but in the US at least we have all this open road, and now there's a segment of our population which thinks nah I'll just look at my phone while the car does its thing...
maybe just go to a place where there's lots of public transit if you don't want to drive.

maybe I'm just getting old. where's my Ensure?

You don't get paid to do it. The people who want to participate in the full self driving beta opt in on the display.

Then you have to drive while Tesla records data about your driving to get a sense of how safe of a driver you are. They started by granting access to the beta for people who had driven at least 100 miles and had a 100/100 score. A few weeks later, they rolled it out to people with 99/100. They're estimating that people with 98/100 will get it next week. The average score is around 80.

One you get access to the beta, your driving isn't graded any more, but you can be removed from the beta if you have too many forced full self driving cancelations, or the car detects you not paying attention too many times with the in-cabin camera. The Model 3 and Y have the in-cabin cameras, but the S and X don't. I'd have to check to see if they've added that in the 2021 versions, but I don't think they did.

All I'm saying is, you can do that if you want, but you should get paid for it at the very least. Tesla can afford it. If something went terribly wrong and you got hurt or other people on the road did, it comes out of your pocket.

I would definitely like to get paid for it, but that's how they're choosing to run the program.

They repeatedly stress that you need to pay attention at all times, even with the navigate on autopilot feature that's for highway driving. Navigate on autopilot has been out for much longer and works very well. It's still not a perfect feature, though.

The car doesn't do anything that you don't let it do. Exiting autopilot or full self driving requires either turning the wheel a bit past the level of resistance it gives, hitting the brake, or pushing the stalk forward.

Eh, the point right now is to get any and all scenarios that the car will run into in the real world, so pretty much anywhere is good. The more chaotic, the better, imo. They can get a good amount of programming for chaotic scenarios in earlier and improve upon them more and more as time goes on.

Don't use your customers as free testers.

Don't use your unproven automation on the streets.

Go to a private test track and test it, hire people to test it.

The public should not be victims of Tesla's Alpha/Beta Testing of their automation.

Same applies to every auto maker.

Automatic train operation (ATO) is an operational safety enhancement device used to help automate the operation of trains. The degree of automation is indicated by the Grade of Automation (GoA), up to GoA level 4 (where the train is automatically controlled without any staff on board).

In theory they don't and a computer could control them. In practice, to stop the train a mile after it blows through a car stopped on the tracks.

"What? It's not flawless during a test? BOOOOOOO! LITERALLY EVERYTHING ABOUT IT SUCKS FOREVER!"

Considering the progress and impact Tesla Inc has already made in the car industry so far, eventually getting to a fully self-driving car does seem within conceivable reach.
Better that they test it thoroughly than if they didn't. Especially since a lot of people, competitors and industries will be looking for any kind of figurative ammo to boo a fully self-driving car when it does become available to the public.
