I was just looking at the wikipedia pages and noticed this. SPD2, considered by far the best superhero movie, actually grossed less than its predecessor despite the far more positive reviews, legacy and still being one of the biggest hits that year.

SPD3 which had a mixed reception, saw the highest grossing.

What's up with that

You can sort of explain away SPD3 making the most by the fact that superhero movies as a modern genre were firmly established at that point and were probably just pulling in larger audiences overall. It also probably got more advertising and/or a better weekend date since it's clear the studio was a lot more involved in the third one.

Spider-man 1 was massive in pop culture, it was everywhere. I barley even knew Spider-man 2 came out when it did.

Spider-Man 3 came out in 2007. Always feels weird for some reason. Just a year before the MCU kicked off but it seems like another era of superhero movie

1 had the hype and no predecessors to temper expectations.
3 had Venom. Didn't need to be good.

Empire Strikes Back, Attack of the Clones and The Last Jedi all went down too. But the third movie did as well.

Spider-man 3 is an interesting one. The marketing hype for that movie was insane.

Tbh I kinda slept on Spider-Man 2.
I was so hyped for Spider-Man because its fucking Spider-Man and then I was so hyped for Spider-Man 3 because I love Venom.

Alfred Molina just didnt look like Doc Oc to me, always envisioned Elton John playing him because of the cartoon. Molina did do a terrific job tho.

I can see Spider-Man 3 doing amazing numbers simply because it promised the fan-favorite villain Venom. And probably the continuation of the Osborn saga with Harry turning evil. Of course, all those sales were before people saw how the movie really was.
