A friend of mine who is a high school teacher was telling me that he said a Simpsons quote to his class, and nobody got it. I pointed out that the show has been on for 30 years, and would be the equivalent of us not knowing the details of some show like Bonanza when we were in high school.

Nah.

For one thing, the lack of quality for the newer episodes is blown way, way out of proportion. The show is still good, just obviously not as good as it was during the first eight seasons.

Which brings me to my next point, the last good season of the show keeps going up. Ten years ago the show was only good through season 8 then it was up to 10, then 13 I think. Hell Ive seen people say its good up until season 16. Hell, I bet that if the Internet was as much of a thing in the late 90s as it is now, thered be people bitching about how the show went downhill after seasons 3 and 4 and just became too wacky (Cape Feare would be despised if it aired today).

I know that insecure nerds like to get weirdly protective of stuff that they liked that was new when they were young, but a kid watching the show for the first time and seeing a later season episode is most likely going to enjoy it just fine.

Im actually kind of a living example of that. Im about as old as the show itself. I didnt start watching the show until around when season 11 was airing. So Id see those new episodes along with reruns, and to 10/11-year old me, it wasnt good Simpsons and bad Simpsons.. it was just The Simpsons.

Anyone would be crazy to deny that the early years are the best, but I hate the Simpsons isnt good meme that became popular in the mid-2000s.

I'm not sure how many people can even attest to the quality of today's Simpsons as I think a large chunk of the show's early fanbase stopped watching like 20 years ago.

My ex had never seen an episode of The Simpsons, but absolutely loved shows like Bob's Burgers, KOTH, Futurama, and modern SNL.

I showed her a couple of golden-era episodes and she went out of her way to repeatedly say how it wasn't funny and it tried too hard. I remember her just rolling her eyes and saying something along the lines of "this is the most basic comedy ever".

It's a pretty decent show, just not funny. That doesn't detract from it though.

My guess is it's because it's a light-hearted show with decently-written female characters, where 99% of the humor doesn't come at anyone's expense.

it was great, and revolutionary when it began. But because of that, nearly every other animated sitcom took its formula and ideas and many simply did it better. When you put the first iteration of something next to all the ones that have come after, it very rarely is the best

Some of the new Simpsons are decently ok and funny, but then they have episodes where they go wildly stupid; it's kind of inconsistent.

I DVR the show and will throw on newer ones here and there. Its better than what was being shoveled out in like the season 14-18 range. And overall, it isnt a bad show. It just doesnt compare to the season 3-8 stuff. They placed their own bar sky high.

Its not that the Simpsons is bad now, its just that the classic Simpsons were super f****** good.

I dont see how Bobs Burgers is any more entertaining than 2021 Simpsons.
