I still have an iPhone 6 plus that I got back in 2016. It's still working great and I intend to use it for a couple more years.

Like others, I keep it until it quits or no longer works optimally (battery) - 4-5 years. I used to get one every 2 years but not anymore.

Typically about every 4 years or so. Ive had my current one for nearly 2 years. My previous phone was having a hard time keeping a charge for more than like 1-2 hours if it wasnt plugged in, so I was in a pretty good big need of a new one.

I usually get a new phone when something happens to my current one

One phone I had, I dropped it and the screen cracked. The phone otherwise worked fine, but the crack on the screen really pissed me off so I bought a new one. Fuck it.

I've had this phone for 2 years. Phone works perfectly fine, only thing I don't like is it isn't a 5G phone. I feel like I should upgrade simply so that I have 5G access. But I feel like it doesn't matter right now, because 4G works perfectly fine with at&t.

when the battery gets so bad that the phone starts dying at 30% charge, or if I destroy it accidentally. My last phone lasted a good few years before I dropped it and the screen got cracked hard, still actually worked pretty well though lol.

Yep. I've only had 3 smartphones ever.

Nexus 6 - Screen got burn-in from those stupid icons at the bottom

Galaxy S8+ - USB port stopped working

Currently have a Pixel 4XL that's doing ok but a little huge in my pocket

I had an iPhone 3 and now I have a 7+. I will probably wait until mine stops getting WiFi/4g to re-up. Before my iPhone 3, I had a flip phone (that was probably 12+ years ago).

Edit- I might have had a 5 in between the 3 and seven. My current phone drains battery life like crazy, so it might be on its way out. Well have to see.

Back when phones were making big stides every generation, I was an every year guy, but in the past 3-4 years we've hit what seems like the apex of this particular formfactor, and the upgrades between phones is smaller and smaller each year. So now i'm on a 3 year cycle.

Until it breaks or becomes too outdated to be practical. Same with PCs, for that matter.

I don't remember so much before that, but I got a Galaxy S3 in 2012, kept it until I was gifted a Meizu M3 Note in IIRC 2016, which I replaced in 2019 (due to the charger port starting to crap out) with a Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 that I'm still using (though now on a custom ROM because there's no sign of an official Android 11 update).
