YouTube algorithm broke and recommended it to tons of people. It was moderately popular in Japan at the time, but almost all the views now are due to the broken algorithm, not Japanese people nostalgic for the song.

But YouTube didn't exist in the 80s and it isn't even the most popular video site in Japan now. It's very strange for it to go from obscurity to tons of people's recommended lists, but that's what happened.
