The only thing I like about it is keeps the front of houses neat. Dont have to worry about hoarders leaving shit on the yards and terrible looking landscaping thats destroyed.

My neighborhood has a nice, Jr. Olympic size pool and two tennis courts. We have a HOA to maintain the communal property and pay bills and shit.

They do help with the "curbside" issues mentioned above - stalled cars, perpetually loose dogs (especially if a bad fence is a contributing factor), unmaintained yards, etc., but it's not difficult for them to overstep their bounds sometimes.

Realistically, it should give the neighborhood stability and uniformity, but it seems that the allure of having power over ones neighbors and the hands in the communal pocket just brings out the worst people for the job.

From discussions I've had with people that had them, you want one that charges a really low amount, like $100 per year. They keep things in shape but don't have enough resources to bust everyone's balls all the time.
