Phantasy Star II is from 1989 and feels every bit like the pre-SNES game that it is. A decent setting idea with a few notable moments but the plot and characterization are so spare and underwhelming its hard to care. I generally expect any JRPG in the last 30 years where any effort whatsoever was put into the story to be better than this simply by trying.

I mean not that the original set a standard for storyline or anything but this one was unnecessarily convoluted with bad translation that kinda plagued video games of its time. It is better than Phantasy Star III but that game is a bottom tier JRPG. Now Phantasy Star IV, that is a fantastic game with a very good story.

4/10

I ended up playing this on Phantasy Star Collection for GBA, so way after it was released. It was probably decent enough for its time at least, but isn't so good by today's standards.

FFVIII story is just awful. Theres a reason why fan theories like Squall dies at the end of disc 1 or Rinoa is Ultimecia in the future got so much attention. If you want I can explain why I love Phantasy Star 2 when I get home and dont have to write on my phone.

Yeah I'm very wildly curious to see how anyone thinks Phantasy Star II has a 10/10 storyline.

This is like saying watching paint dry is one of the most exciting experiences in life.

And also so far, your explanation for why you think FFVIII is a 1 in storyline has literally no explanation.

So I ask TC. When is review bombing and score inflation called into question for something like this? Or is it ok for everyone to dish out suspicious 10s and 1s without question?

It's okay for someone to hate FFVIII. A lot of people do. People don't have to justify low scores.

It doesn't get suspicious until something happens along the lines of, say, someone changing their ratings to affect the overall score.

I can sorta buy "Phantasy Star II's story is a 10/10" being a real opinion. My general understanding of Phantasy Star II's popularity is that it got a lot of praise back in the day (for a Genesis JRPG anyways) and that it still tends to make top 100 Genesis lists but that people who didn't play it back in the day don't tend to like it much.

I mean, I obviously don't agree with him, but if his shit taste plus nostalgia or whatever says it's a 10/10, it's valid.

Am looking forward to the explanation though!

Yeah his explanation for both his 10 and 1 score were extremely vague which is why I'm calling him out on that. I didn't say anything when he scored FF8 a 1 initially but Phantasy Star II, a 10?

And what exactly is 'suspicious' about me openly saying I'm changing my score because hyperbole lovefest scores were clearly inflating Hades' storyline scores. If I did that without saying anything then you can call it suspicious. Besides TC didn't even count my score and I am completely fine with that. I said my piece and I'm not backing down from what I said. I would do the same for many other games if this were allowed but it isn't so I'm not doing it anymore.
