Prosecutors say 38-year-old Howard Shaw, a registered sex offender, approached a jogger on Wards Island Bridge on Thursday at around 7:30 am by asking her for the time. He is then said to have put one of his hand's around her waist and the other over her mouth as he dragged her toward a stairwell. As Shaw attacked the woman in her 50's he told her: 'I don't want to hurt you, I just want sex' as he tried to pull down her pants, according to a criminal complaint. you can have both empathy for a rape attempt victim as well as the situation that leads a person downa path that would make them attempt to rape people.
