Practice makes perfect, I would suggest going to a school parking lot in the evening and driving around. Familiarize yourself with your vehicle.

i started driving when i was 15 and i was extremely good from day one. but i didn't really feel like i had complete control and full vision and understanding of everything until i was maybe in my mid-20's. so it really took several years to feel as confident and amazing as i feel with it right now.

I think you will get comfortable pretty fast. You just gotta do it. Put yourself out there and drive in those places often.

I remember driving for the first time, and then the freeway and even being scared to drive in the city because of hills.

Do you have a license and able to drive legally on your own.? Don't think about the worst case scenario. Just be calm and remember everything you were taught and prioritize safety. Look ahead when you drive, always check mirrors and turn your head little signal when changing lanes or turning on a street. Also increase your speed when changing lanes if you can.

And don't be on the phone, put makeup or eat when you drive.

I started at 15 when I got my learner's. I wasn't very good, and one day a city bus was determined to be right where I was and wasn't gonna take no for an answer, and that scared me out of any driving interest for literal years. Then, a year after I graduated high school, my ex (then a senior) invited me to her graduation and a party. Gotta chase her, etc. Since I was 19, the legal age to just get a license by passing the test without logging all those bullshit driving hours, I had my mom bring me up to speed, got my license within a month and was on my way. It's like I realized it wasn't a big deal, and the anxiety disappeared. After that it was just learning by rote.

Now I love driving, for the most part. Traffic sucks, other drivers suck, but overall it's relaxing.

Think critically. Don't get panicked. Drive around less populated areas to get the hang of it. Then move on to bigger places when you get comfortable and stay calm

You gotta learn man. It's a critical skill. Get your permit first and Practice driving in a empty parking lot with someone over 25 (or whatever try law is).

I learned on a motorcycle first. I felt it was much more intuitive. Then I learned how to drive a car. Now I haven't driven either in like a decade because I live in an area with awesome public transportation

I'm a firm advocate of the idea that learning on a manual makes you a better driver. A bike would possibly be even better, because the handling characteristics are so intertwined with your physical movements

I'll echo it taking a few months...the biggest thing for me was always feeling I didn't have full control over the car. Using turn signals, managing the clutch point, trying to match speeds with other cars... It was a lot to keep track of.

Don't try to overcompensate! Just follow your reflexes about being slow and safe.

Oh and congrats on getting a car!!!

Take lessons from a reputable driving school. Lessons are not just for learner drivers. After that it's just a matter of practice in conditions that will help you feel safer. Stay on roads with a low speed limit, don't drive at night or in the rain, don't drive in heavy traffic. Go on short enjoyable trips to the countryside/tourist spot for fun.

I didn't drive for a few years and was very nervous to try again so I took some lessons having explained the situation to the instructor. It really helped a lot and after a 5 or 6 lessons I felt confident enough to drive again.

I remember my Dad teaching me in an old Jeep Wrangler with a 5 speed and taking me on dirt roads.

Then I got my first car and I probably didn't become a great driver for at least a year or two. I had a few small accidents but never got hurt.

Then when I graduated college I got a motorcycle and, same deal.. took at least 5,000 miles or so before I became proficient, and yes I had a few accidents.

Never. You are controlling something that goes way faster than humans can and also blocks a lot of your view with like all the stuff that isnt window. And there are a bunch of others doing the same. And you have no idea of knowing if they know what the fuck they are doing.

I know how to drive. I don't want to do it anymore. I have a car if it's absolutely crucial that I drive but I'm in shape enough to bike and walk everywhere my daily life takes me and can take rideshares and public transportation for everything else.

Literally took me twenty minutes for regular handling in a parking lot, maybe ten minutes for street driving. Took weeks before I was daring enough to get on the highway, but then I realized it's the easiest kind of driving lol

Just relax

This. Its not hard at all. Just be aware and youll be fine. Look before you make that turn. Check your shoulder and mirrors before you switch lanes.

As much as I hated growing up in a rural area, my family allowing me to drive the big trucks as a child on the ranch was helpful. Once I was able to drive normal vehicles on real roads it was so easy.

What helped me when I first started was planning out my routes via Google Maps. So I knew exactly what lane I needed to be in, where the lights were, stop signs, etc. And just going to one or two places over and over a hundred times.

Only took me a couple of months to get completely comfortable.

I was mowing the lawn with a ride on mower. Helped me get used to reversing, turning and straightening my lines. Go karts also helped you get the feel of trusting yourself with your vehicle. After that, you drive the real deal but with more restrictions. Just learn the signs, the roads and plan your destination and you'll do fine. Took me a month to be comfortable with the highway.

I dont agree. Drive whichever way is comfortable for you. As long as you have a firm grip on the wheel thats all that matters.
