The Surge 1 is a little rough. 2 is a lot more polished.

2 is probably my favorite soulslike

i only played 2, but i thought it was sick. imagine a dark souls map made out of a crumbling cyberpunk city, with paths through canals, buildings, sewers, military defenses, etc. then add an exosuit that you can customize and swap out each limb for new parts. see an enemy using cool armor or a weapon you like? target that limb and dismember it, and you get the part as a guaranteed drop, and all the loot's upgradeable too.

I finished the first one and started the 2nd one. The first one is probably not worth playing today. There's not a lot of story and you'll be fighting the same enemies in the same confusing corridors forever.

2nd one is better in every way but I was burnt out from the first one. I felt like after 30 minutes I had seen everything since the formula remains the same. I probably played too many of these soulslike by now.

If you think that the idea of the exo suits is neat then I would definitely recommend the game.

The second game is much more polished but the first game has a generally more praised setting that leans more into the "everything is a construction machine that has gone fucking bananas" tone. The second game has a brighter pallette and a bit more variation.

Edit: much like Dark Souls, you don't have to play 1 before 2, but you'll understand small references.
