That's stupid as fuck. With the ability to disable it on a video by video basis, that solves any issues of downvote campaigns. They should get rid of public voting completely in that case.

So? We used to get through life just fine without begging for validation from random strangers on the Internet. We should get rid of likes and dislikes on all social media. They're one of the best examples of toxic Internet culture that has seeped into real life.

In the case of YouTube, likes actually have some value and affect the visibility of channels.

This was back in July for me -- they did reappear recently, but I was re-reading this thread and saw that many people still had dislikes showing for them, leading me to believe in hindsight that they might've been "pilot testing" the removal.

Although back in July the button was still there, it just didn't show the count. This seems now like they're actually removing the button altogether.

IIRC they're keeping the button and video owners will still be able to see the number. It's just being set to permanently hide the number from viewers.

Probably Nintendo complained about it after the NSO expansion pack video got like 90% down voted. This will only make dislike more vocal through other means. Things dont get reppressed easily.

It's a dumb decision because people need to be conveyed when a video is shitty or the content within said video is shitty. Guarantee this isn't because of some movement to promote positivity, more like some big companies whined that their video(s) were getting heavy dislikes and asked for the removal (you know, instead of actually looking inward and reflecting on why said video(s) were so heavily bombed).

However, as minor as it is, I'll be happy to no longer see "x amount of people who disliked this are dumb!" or "OMG how could anyone dislike this!?1!!?" comments on all kinds of videos.

Comments to likes is the way things get ratio'd in Twitter but seriously, why would you remove dislikes from a platform that allows reviews and stuff where a bunch of dislikes could suggest right away that a vid isn't helpful?

People are forgetting that the like to dislike ratio is important for quickly gauging whether a technical how to video is legit or not. Now it will be much more difficult to tell.
