So basically up until this point has just been the easiest breeziest anime ever. Everything works out and the MC is the ultimate mary sue, good at literally everything and everyone worships him etc. He resolves every conflict by just being super nice to everyone and making them see how nice he is. It's total wish fulfillment shit. Very cruisy, low conflict anime.

And then out of fucking NOWHERE the series takes a complete bizarro world tone flip and he literally murders 20,000 humans in an instant so that he can become a demon lord. It's fucking brutal as well. You're just watching fairly innocent soldiers getting shot by fucking water lazer bullets, it's like those lazers from Alice in Borderland.

What the hell happened? When did I start watching Berserk?

I almost forgot about this anime since Funimation never told me about season 2. Normally it would pop up in my Continue Watching category. I found out only a month or so ago that season 2 was out. I may or may not give it a watch.

He killed monsters before, now he's just killing an invading army of humans. He starts out killing, he fights a ton of monsters to get to where he is, he fights and kills other sentient races... It's not out of nowhere, it's pretty clearly in retaliation to their attack and has a practical purpose for the carnage. And he does so in a way that's as painless as possible, basically the way we kill cows for food.

Why do you do this?

I like that idea. The power of friendship that goes so far that you are willing to waste anyone you see as a problem to save your friends.

Even better if the MC is totally unaware how off the deep end they are going.

You sure you actually watched the anime? There was nothing "out of nowhere " about that attack, and it's actually one of the more tame battles(if you could even call it a battle).

Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike it. I just didn't expect it at all.

Also this anime is not that deep. I made a berserk reference but let's be real: the characters are not going to reflect on this, there will be no inner turmoil, no soul searching or remorse. There will be waifus and more being good at literally everything, I guess he just hadn't ticked off "vengeaful psycho" on his "Things I'm Good At" list yet.

I stopped watching after early season 2. This sounds much better than collecting new friends of different races. I may pick it back up

Yeah. He killed 20,000 human soldiers to turn into a demon lord to save like I dunno, 30 of his kin. And even before he did it he acknowledged that humans aren't inherently evil and they are just easily influenced by outside forces (in this case, Clayman and the church).

None of this justifies a literal genocide, mind you.

You seem to have missed the part where that army ransacked his city first, killed many of it's citizens, and that they were planning to return and kill off the survivors soon after.

I didn't miss that part but it doesn't fit with the theme of the show up till then at all for him to just go in and brutally execute every single footsoldier with zero remorse. How many other conflicts/wars did he stop by just doing his kawaii slime diplomat thing? Every single one, basically

Not really a tone flip. You just weren't paying enough attention. Long before that the Orcs were literally driven insane to the point where they eat anything in their path including their own comrades

Series was already kind of dark

Yeah but didn't he go in and singlehandedly save their entire species?

Killing an invading army is not genocide

That's kinda the entire point. He finally had a conflict with someone who he couldn't just reason with. And because the show had been so low stakes before then, he hadn't experienced loss either. It brought out a darker, more serious side of the MC.

On top of that, killing the enemy humans would give him the ability to revive those who had died. He wasnt just killing for the fun of it.

If you fast forwarded through each episode at 10x speed then the first post maybe makes sense

Literal episode 3 is when MC decapitates a leader in front of his troops because the leader refused to give up

This isn't the first time Funimation got trolled by some anime that took a dark or erotic (or darkly erotic) turn.

If those soldiers didn't want to die, they shouldn't have invaded.
