The plot of this game is nuts, for the first quarter you'll constantly go like "Wait WHAT", the second quarter you'll feel like you have it figured out and in the third quarter you'll be back to "Wait WHAT", and in the fourth quarter you'll still be piecing together all the stuff to make sense of it.

Of which the story will make sense I assure you, it's actually put together pretty well I liked it a lot.

Don't bother

The combat mode ruins what could otherwise have been a 11/10 game

This is a bad post that you should ignore.

Even if you don't like the combat the game is still incredible.

Without the combat mode it's an incredible game that deserves a lot more love than it gets

With the combat mode it's literally unplayable

Well, "unfinishable"

Nope. The combat's fine, nowhere near unplayable or unfinishable.

The game has three parts

One part is a recap/info mode. You can unlock info on various aspects of the story and recap VN scenes. Perfectly fine

One part (the biggest) is the VN part. I'm not exaggerating when I say it's one of the best times I've had in gaming. It's crafted well and is an absolute joy to play through

One part is the combat mode. It's a real time strategy type thing. The way the game works, you do VN mode until it doesn't let you go further, then you do combat mode all in one go (more or less), then you go back to VN mode and get to the ending. If you do it any other way, combat mode dialogue spoils some reveals that are much better experienced in VN mode.

The problem is that the combat mode is dull and tedious. It doesn't add anything to the game, only detracts from it. I can't do more than one 5-10 min mission at a time without dropping it and playing something else; even though I happily spent hours at a time in VN mode

In all seriousness, try it, but be aware that combat mode is this game's weak point. And try to prioritize VN mode over combat mode when possible, because of the reveal/spoiler thing

Combat mode is a pretty basic RTS deal but it was pretty satisfying to play IMO. Obliterating hundreds of enemy units in a single strike feels great.

There's also not truly spoilers in combat mode dialogue, as the game is meant to be played in whatever order you end up playing it in, which is why playthrough topics for this game are entertaining. Everyone does things in different orders and hits revelations at different points.

So nah you don't have to do combat mode all in one go once you get locked out of the VN segments. I hopped back and forth between them at will.

Is this really true? how bad is it to experience a plot point in combat mode as opposed to VN mode?
Ive only played the tutorial mission so far but I don't think the combat is bad? i haven't played it enough to really judge it though

It's not really true, no.

Yes, it is true. I don't remember which ones off the top of my head, but there were definitely points where something that was a big reveal in VN mode was just casually tossed into the conversation in combat mode. It's also something I saw brought up in a few reviews, which is why I decided to play the game that way in the first place

Edit: just remembered a twist that was spoiled in combat mode: the identity of the idol on TV it's a complete storyline/mystery in VN mode and they just mention it like it's no big deal in combat mode

Combat being bad is probably a YMMV thing. I wouldn't have minded if it were just mediocre, but I hated that it was actively tedious (but once again, ymmv)

Feels like it probably wasn't a big reveal if you don't remember it!

Like I said, the game is designed to be played in whatever order you end up doing so. Some people do certain characters first and hit certain reveals first, some people do combat mode first, and I've never heard anyone say until now that you'd ruin the experience that way.

Yeah I don't see that bit as a big mystery as it felt pretty obvious to me from the jump well before the game revealed it in any capacity.

Eh, I guess it's another YMMV thing then. It was a mystery to me

Anyway, I hope you get more out of the game than I did TC

Nah. Play who you want, you'll eventually hit locks that require you to play other people or combat mode. Then you do that, unlock more people, repeat.
