I've been playing Witcher 3 and Xenoblade Chronicles X, both of which have level requirements to wear certain gear, and I hate it so much.

Like, I get that high level gear can be game breaking early on, and open world games like this can struggle to have a smooth upgrade curve. But when you're level 10, and the gear is protected by a level 30 monster, I think if you manage to beat the odds and kill the monster, you should get to wear the gear. No point having two level gates.

And also, they're single player games, so it's not like you're getting an unfair advantage over anyone.

It's to urge you to grind and put more hours in the game so people can say, "I put 200 hours in The Witcher 3 man that's a long game"

Nah, its fine and its there for a reason. If you manage to beat that level 30 monster, grats, you probably wasted 30 minutes of your life pecking away at it, but its not intended for you to have gear that powerful that early regardless of your misgivings with the secondary gate.

That's just restating the problem. My point is that if game designers don't want me to use it early, make it unobtainable. I think it's bad game design having arbitrary level requirements like that. It just ends up cluttering the inventory until it's usable. And in the worst case scenarios, the gear is only marginally better than or equal to stuff that appears in shops at that level.

Stuff like that and leveled loot suck. Just let us play the game how we want.

It kind of makes sense. If you start weightlifting, you can't start right off to bench pressing 300 pounds, because you can't. I guess it's the game's version of feeling accomplished, from that slow build to success, or some shit.

I agree, TC. If you can get the item you should be able to use it.

Yeah I've really gone off levels in gaming

It irritated the fuck out of me in Assassin's Creed oddesy that you'd sneak up on a guy and slit his throat and it would barely hurt him because his juglar vein is level 34 and your blade is only level 17

That shit's bollocks and that bollocks is shit.

You can balance your game without resorting to that crap.

well that works on something like dark souls, not being able to use an equipment without the necessary stats for it

in rpgs that feature special items rarely dropped by an enemy, level requirement is bs, but i guess an open world offering to freedom to grind wherever may have to resort to item level requirement for a sense of linearity

Exactly. If you absolutely MUST make higher level enemies near-impossible to assassinate, give them increased detection range, or put them in a position where it's almost impossible to not raise the alarm without late-game skills or just do something.
