I've only seen the movie too but I plan to read the books. I think itw like Game of Thrones in space. And mixed with Dances with Wolves. I know a little about what will happen in part 2.

At first yeah, a bit environmentalist as well, especially in the book with Kynes, he goes into a good amount of detail on the ecology and whatnot on Arrakis.

The second turns into more of a commentary on how dangerous it can be to place huge amounts of faith and charisma in a single entity.

I read the book back in high school in the mid 00s so I only remember bits and pieces at best.

It's also the only way,spoilers from I think the second book, that travel hapens. The pilots of ships use it for the prescience it gives, otherwise ships travel faster than pilots can react and they would crash.

Ah, I was unaware of that, haven't seen it yet. But yeah in the books that revelation doesn't happen till Dune Messiah.
