These days I only have fun if I set challenges for myself. Usually, if its a game with a campaign like GTA or a shooter, and I know it well enough (or a Bthesda game), I will just do an ironman one life only playthrough. It really gives a breath of fresh air and needed intensity to games you might be bored with.

this is true.

think i once gave up most gaming for a month because i was in so much pain after the seizure incident. what i did in my chair while seizing messed up my back pretty good.

for anyone who says you could've taken some tylenol or advil. there's only so much limit on those (used to get nasty headaches if i take advil for longer than 3 days).

Speaking as someone who spends all day playing games, I can definitely quit at any time. It's just a time filler, which I can replace with anything. I used to spend all my time reading books, one day I simply stopped and never picked up a book again. There well may be a time when I put down my games and I won't look back.

That time may be soon actually, I haven't felt much interest in today's releases. Maybe I'll go into... Photography or something.

Well, I only buy AAA games 2 - 3 years later when they're on a good sale ($20 or less). But even then, I rearely play them, and often times just go back to the great games I was playing in the 2000s

My love of video games is always defeated by my dislike of spending money and the shitty businsess practices of the games industry

I swear most of the games I play are late 90s/early 2000s stuff because it's dirt cheap or free and doesn't have the marketing bollocks.

I miss when games were just things you played for fun. You put them in your magic smiles machine, turned it on and played a game. It seems like games now are social experiments designed to either hypnotize you into playing and sharing the game everyday or get you to keep spending money on it.

It's hard to put into words but the vibe you used to get from things like Spyro or MGS2 or Vampire The Masqurade Bloodlines or Final Fantasy 9 or Silent Hill 2 is just absent in (most) modern games.

Except generally some indy ones like This War of Mine or Undertale or FTL that seem to genuinely want you to just play the game.

Even single player narrative focused games like Beyond Two Souls and The Last of Us 2 don't have this vibe. They feel so utterly soulless and designed by commitee.

And before anyone screams nostalgia, I grew up on Genesis and fully admit (well PC's obviously are best but when it comes to consoles) PS1/PS2 era was the best.

I really could never play a video game again and not miss much.

That said when you discover a really good one and sink your teeth into it, that's the best.

I wish I could erase my memories of Mass Effect and replay the entire series for the first time again. Then lose all my save progress right before the last mission of ME3 so I don't endure the ending

I was barely out of my diapers in 2000. I have no interest in old games. You couldn't pay me to play them.

I already play way fewer video games than I used to, mostly due to time constraints and the fact that I hate the focus on microtransactions and "games as a service" these days.

I dunno. I think I could on the basis that I don't get nearly as much joy out of it as I used to. I get really excited by maybe 1 game a year at this point, and half of those end up being kind of disappointing in the end. I sometimes go 3+ weeks without playing anything.

I do think if my job didn't make me feel so drained I might game a bit more though. Some days I feel like work sucked so bad I just don't even have the brain power to play a game.

Yeah

Re8 was the only game this year I really was looking forward too

And it was good but not amazing

Typically I'm putting hours in a day. Even if I work a 60-70 hour week. But, if I'm moving or something. Might be on hold for a couple or weeks. Or if I'm taking a trip or something. Could be months. I love games. But there are probably over a dozen other activities I enjoy just as much.
