It's more of the culture that can be an issue
like in soccer how fights can happen between fans for being the wrong side
or worse just because they want to fight and don't care about the teams

or how like your teams wins so you eat horse shit

Everybody's got a hobby and there are real passionate fans of anything. My only issues are the looking down on those who aren't sports fans, though the open contempt and such seems to have lessened over the years and doing the "we/us" stuff. You never see fans of movies go "Yeah, we made a great movie this year" when a movie they like comes out or video game fans going "yeah we did real good with this game". It's really, really silly. I still love doing the typical smart allec "so what position you play?" when one pulls that.

That and all the yelling. Nobody wants to hear that shit. Oh and the rioting too.

dumb question but... how do sports fans pick a favorite team? is it related to the area the team is from or the players on the team?

A lot of it is you root for the team that plays in your hometown.

Coming from Canada, we don't have any nfl teams, but I'm a fan of the Raiders because when I was five and huge into the WWE(F), I saw Raiders fans dressed up like Animal and Hawk (The Road Warriors) so they became my team.

It depends on a lot things like a lot of people latch on to their family members favorite teams while they're young or they might like specific players or it's their hometown team. There's no real way to choose a favorite team besides whatever reason you make up.

At least console dorks from what I've seen don't pretend they're a part of Sony/Nintendo/Microsoft. "Yeah we did good with the PS5 and we're going to beat Microsoft this quarter."

Yeah, I enjoy sports but Ill never be one of those guys dressed in a Viking helmet painted to my teams colours and screaming in the stands. Honestly, Im a Lions fan but I wouldnt take time out of my day to go watch a game live for free with free drinks and a limo. Ill go a step further and say I wish the Ford Field was near empty for every game. I just dont understand paying to watch a team who is so historically bad.

No other group of fans does that. No way that it's just a colloquialism. Sports teams are the only things you can LARP as without being made fun of.

Even if they do it's not near the level sports fans do it.

The "we/us" thing absolutely is just used as a shorthand way to differentiate the team you're rooting for in most cases.

It really isn't hard to understand, when you invest time and energy into something, you feel connected to it.

People who don't understand sports fans don't understand why people would be invested in something like that. This is no different from the people who don't understand why someone would be invested in video games.

This is actually not true for many people. Many embrace new franchises when they move or have favorite teams they've never been geographically near. It is all about the connection to the franchise, whether that is liking the current players and managers, the history of the team, or even the current owners. Sometimes the reasoning is completely random, like you played NFL2K5 and spammed the Rams, and then learned everything about their franchise and became a fan of it as a result.

I don't know. I can recognize and appreciate accomplishments of others. I do think it is weird when fans get really invested as if they have some kind of connection to the team besides paying to watch them. Especially nowadays where players get traded nonstop.

You root for the closest home team. Come on, you don't have to be a non sports fan to not know these kinda stuff.

Yeah, it's pretty random. Like, I'm a cowboys fan because I was born in Dallas and my parents were cowboys fans so I watched onto them for that reason, but I'm also a Browns fan because my first Madden in 06 I created a player and got drafted by them so they became my perpetual "second" team.
