that said, tc has been historically annoying as fuck (and there's no reason to think he's any different irl), so it's a lose-lose situation really

he either chooses not to go and ruins his reputation amongst his peers, or he does go and ruins the party itself by virtue of him being him

Unless your co-workers suck complete ass, idk why you wouldn't want to go. Free booze and food at (hopefully) a decent venue. Stay for an hour or so to eat and then Irish goodbye if it really sucks. Still get credit for showing up.

Otherwise, "family obligation" is probably the safest bet

There isn't one, you have to go.

Only one that might work is playing the sick card but they will likely see through it. You could also say you're trying to be careful due to covid and you will see an immunocompromised family member the next day.

could bail early though. at my old job there were some people who always left right after the food was served

Eh, honestly I'm just an introvert that was never super into partying with people I don't know. Though I'm not adamantly against it and I do get the value of being seen as approachable by the people you work around.

I don't think you have to be best friends with everyone personally, but it's certainly better to be liked than disliked. Plus hey, free food and drink is rarely a bad thing.

I dont feel comfortable on large group gatherings due to COVID even thought Im vaccinated. Im sad I wont be able to attend but my health is a priority for me. This only applies if you are not already forced to go to the office to work in a crowded space
