I read in the newspaper yesterday that it's a direct sequel to the first movie. That means it's not Ghostbusters 3, it's the new Ghostbusters 2.

It was an entertainment piece I read in a newspaper yesterday.

That's a pretty big oopsie on their part if they can get in touch with Dan Aykroyd and the film's director for a few comments and still post erroneously that it ignores the second movie.

I think most people who hate Ghostbusters II do so because of the first hour.

It was a bad decision to break up Peter and Dana and it was an even worse one to reveal that the Ghostbusters have been living dead end lives after everyone inexplicably decided they were frauds.

There's not enough humor to make up for that double shot of depression.

GB2 is great. My problem is they battle a god in the first and couldn't top it in the second.

If what I've read is to be believed, it came about because of a behind the scenes game of tug-of-war.

The studio wanted the sequel to be more like the cartoon show which was popular and had a highly profitable toyline. That's why Janine has red hair, Winston is cleanshaven, and Slimer hangs out in the Ghostbusters headquarters. It's also why they cut out smoking and toned down the language and innuendo. And so somebody made it a point to say that the Ghostbusters have done absolutely nothing in the past five years. They wanted to distance the movie from the cartoon by saying that the Ghostbusters aren't heroes to the public and haven't done anything since Gozer.

I get why they would do it, but that is a textbook example of somebody cutting off their nose to spite their face.

Doesn't Afterlife also have the same issue where apparently nobody remembers that ghosts were a thing?

I think I know where they're going with that. If you look at the final battle with Gozer, nobody on ground level saw anything more than flashing lights and explosions.

But that doesn't make up for Slimer appearing in broad daylight, for the ghost cabbie, for the tunnel ghost, for the library ghost, the monstrous "terror dogs," for the 100 ft. Stay Puft Marshmallow Man, or for the dozens of customers they had during the montage. It's like doing a sequel to Independence Day where nobody believes in aliens.

You can't just focus on one scene and say, "Whoops. Nobody say it up close except for the Ghostbusters."

I just watched the second movie. I liked it plenty.
People believed in ghosts still. But ghosts aren't really a problem then. Ghostbusters are out of business in a sense. Their not needed as much. Only the mayor's aid, and judge mentioned not believing in ghosts I think. Movie seemed pretty self aware to me.

I'm hoping after life can be just as good. The video game was pretty darn good.

You see Ray's Occult Books in one of the trailers, so it absolutely acknowledges Ghostbusters 2.

I think what they probably meant is that (again, going from the trailers) the plot is clearly tied to the first one (from the trailers alone we have Shandor, Gozer and the Terror Dogs, and it looks like the kids' mum becomes Zuul), rather than meaning it removes the second from canon.
