31 years old, never had my own house before. So need to know what to buy for it. Need a washer/dryer, garbage cans, and a new water heater. And a vacuum, preferably a robot one since it's a ranch style and only one floor so why not? What did you guys need for your first houses/apartments that you forgot to buy because I need help with this lol

If you get a robot vacuum make sure it's capable of going over wires, and on to rugs and stuff. I bought one and any sort of elevation whatsoever it gets stuck. Complete piece of shit and waste of money.

used truck, or if you have a vehicle capable of towing, a trailer. dont spend more than $5k on the truck, though.

good upright vacuum and good wet / dry shop vacuum.

lawn tools. buy the hand tools at garage sales next spring, never buy human powered lawn tools new. you'll need a few shovels, garden rake, leaf rake, some pry bars, hoe, seed spreader, shears, wheel barrow should get you going. And you need some hoses, but feel free to buy them new.

home tools. unless your house is brand new, be ready to repair stuff. And if it is brand new, expect to start having to repair stuff 6 months after the warranty expires. get a chop saw (aka compound sliding miter saw), circular saw, jig saw, reciprocating saw, hammer drill (the one with a variable sized chuck), impact driver, random orbit sander, belt sander. also need to get some stuff for electrical (pliers, voltmeter, multi-meter, box full of wiring and tape and wire nuts and strippers and etc).

if you haven't got good flatware (forks, spoons, knives) get it now, get good dishes and glasses as well. makes everything feel so much classier than drinking out of jars and your parents hand-me-down dishes.

And replace all your smoke alarm batteries, carbon monoxide alarm battery, and get at least 1 fire extinguisher, I have 3, 1 in my kitchen, 1 in my garage, 1 in my detaches shop. And if you don't have enough fire alarms / carbon monoxide alarms, get them.

And change the locks on your door. Old home owner could still have keys. If the locks are all different brands, consider going to a single brand. I like schlage. Kwikset sucks for rust resistance if you are at all near water, according the locksmith i went to.

Finally, plant a tree as soon as possible to your first day.

Aint buying a new fridge until the current one breaks tbh. Im already buying a washer and drier that stacks up. And a water heater.

[LFAQs-redacted-quote]

The oven is old, Ill look into it. Especially if I can get a deal buying appliances at once including the washer and dryer above. Im really trying to keep this all under like 6k though so Ill still have 10k to put towards my student loans before payments kick in again in January.

if I see a set on Black Friday I will. But I aint a good enough cook to justify some like 200+ MSRP set. Ill get my practice in with something more reasonably priced.

Just FYI a shop vac isn't like a regular vacuum. You need it if something like your water tank breaks and dumps water all over your floor or you have toilet / sink start leaking while you're asleep.

dont doorbells cost money for retaining footage? as in theyre only good for live video without it?

And the later thing, its one story house so idk. Feel like I might fuck up the gutters/ roof trying to do some shit myself.

Also get some LED lightbulbs.

Luckily my place came with an ok stove. I had a bed and dresser already and was given dishes, towels, and pictures and stuff. Had to get a fridge, washer and dryer, end tables, microwave, couch, loveseat, lawn mower.

See if someone will throw you a housewarming party. I had like 40 people show up and they all brought something. Some gave money. My aunt gave me some things to hang on the wall and one had a $100 bill in it. I was damn.

Id add a stepstool and 6 foot step ladder

Air purifiers in the living room and bedroom Id also recommend if you have allergies, asthma or some other air quality sensitivity. Ive been running them in my house and almost never have to take any allergy medications anymore.

Hardware for hanging pictures on the wall (Ive used both hooks and 3M Command strips)
