I've been to both as a contractor doing repair work.

I was in the town jail cell for a couple hours. Then the cop wouldn't take me home and I had to walk like 2 miles still half drunk.

longest time I spent in jail was 3 months. I was denied bond because of my record. I was facing years in prison at the time. Ive spent a total of right around a year in jail. Ive also been in work release, home detention and probation for around 6 years all together.

Barring false convictions, unfair charges in a case where you had to defend yourself or others, or maybe like weed maybe, you have to be a pretty messed up person to do something bad enough to get sent to jail or prison
