It doesn't degrade, it's here forever and we aren't slowing down. Oceans are already full of plastic and we only really started using it heavily in the mid 20th century. All the existing plastic pollution will still be a problem in 100 years but we'll have compounded the problem with our ongoing production of plastic, so it'll be even worse.

When will we actually stop making so much more plastic trash?

They're working on biodegradable plastics right now, and if that's successful maybe we'll see most consumable uses switch to that.
