At Chapter 2 I think? It's beautiful to look at, the themes and atmosphere are great. Solid music choices. The game loop is a walking simulator, sure. I love walking simulators. Dear Esther, Ethan Carter, Machine for Pigs, etc etc. But my main problem is the story.

It's a fucking mushroom trip of a narrative without any semblance of consistent characters, continuity, consequence or cost or anything. It feels like it makes it's own rules up as it goes to fill in the slots for crazier and crazier shit Kojima came up with. I'm just not liking the story, at all, and I've already watched hours of cutscenes and I suspect hours more remain.

Seems like he lost momentum somewhere early in development, moved on to another project, and when they came back to Death Stranding..... it was just largely a different situation, and the final product sort of missed it mark. Not to mention that every gamer who would really love this sort of thing wont speak up because every discussion becomes volitile in basically the worst way without going full catastrophic.

personally, I didn't like the game at all, at any point.

but I feel like if you're enjoying the gameplay already, you should keep going just in case anything else resonates with you.

the story, characters, and writing were bad all the way through, IMO, and never got better as the game went on, but compared to you, I didn't like the gameplay, either.

Chapter 3 is when it really opens up. Push through to there and dont waste too much time in the opening area.

you can return later with better equipment

if you still havent gotten into the story by then then I dont think you will. I love the game but it is peak Kohima and if you dont like the story the gameplay probably isnt enough to keep you interested until the end.
