Everything Im seeing points to the T-Rex being bigger. The elephant could certainly do some damage and has a chance at winning, but Im putting my money on the T-Rex.

The tusks might do some damage but the t rex in bigger faster and more agile.

First thing the t rex would do is tear the elephants trunk off.

oh that picture the t rex looks a lot bigger. I thought that a big male african elephant was about the same size as an avg adult t rex. Could be wrong

African Elephant: 1800 - 6300 kg plus two big ass tusks , average walking speed of 4.5 mph

T-Rex: 5000 - 7000 kg plus a lot o' teeth , average walking speed estimated 4.5 - 6.7 mph

I'll bet on the dragon.

how do they get the avg walking speed of the t rex? So the t rex was bigger and faster?

Of course, we can only estimate.

also, iirc the t rex's bones were mostly hollow like a bird. While an elephant's wouldn't be.

Correct, meaning an impact from the elephant would be more likely to fatally injure the dinosaur. Actually, it would probably end with a draw more often than not because both would die from injuries.

I apologize, I think I misrepresented the science. The article I quoted those figures from was this: https://www.livescience.com/t-rex-slow-walker-tail.html

However, after reviewing the research paper cited in that article - https://royalsocietypublishing.org/doi/10.1098/rsos.201441 - it seems that the "new estimates" mentioned actually put the preferred walking speed of the T-Rex at 1.28 m/s, which converts to about 2.9 mph. That puts it lower than an elephant's, which begs to question how well the average walking speed correlates to agility whilst fighting. Perhaps that's not the best metric to judge by.

In truth, I guess the short answer is, "who knows?"

Maybe, but I imagine the elephant would seriously fuck it up during the fight before losing. Might be technically smaller but pretty close in weight with a more compact and dense skeleton.

Elephants are intelligent, walking tanks. Smaller than a T. rex but dense and relatively close in weight, and with thick skin almost ten times as thick as the dinosaur's. If the T. rex can get around behind it, it might have a chance, but the elephant would stay facing the T. rex at all times, presenting its sharp tusks and basically-impenetrable skull.

I think it's more a question of how long it would take for the T. rex to give up and walk away.

Well you would have to ask if the elephants had encountered and fought t-rex successfully before.

Their passing down of survival techniques is practically legendary after all.

It probably helps that all the predators that live around them are quite a bit smaller.
