The keys for doors in my building are in a Master Lock key box on the alley gate. While it took me more than one search to find, I found 2 videos on picking Master Lock and a few more for other key lock boxes.

Why is this legal? All leases in Chicago have a clause that you cannot put a bolt on your door which prevents access. Why is this legal?

The only buildings on my block which do not have lockboxes on the gates are private ownership.

To make it worse I have seen the strip used lying discarded on the ground many times and I have wondered why it is there and what is was. I do have security cameras. Wyze.

If it's the kind I'm thinking of then I, as an amateur lockpicker who only started during COVID as a hobby, could get that open in 2 minutes max.

It's like that for most buildings on your block? That's a weird system. I know for vacant houses they have lockboxes like that, so that the realtors can access/show the property. But for ones that are being lived in, that seems weird.

Have you expressed your concern to the landlord/property management?

I informed the managing realty company. I think that they will act on it because they are concerned that someone has access to the basement. In the meantime I have 2 Wyze cams: one on the door and one on the back windows.
