Typically women weren't used in slapstick comedy and he created Amy to see if he could get a laugh by hurting a girl in humorous ways
You will notice when watching that if any character is gonna get hurt by something in the background it will often be Amy

I can't remember any instances of her being hurt in the background or doing much of anything really

You dont know any Amys, Im surmising. Amy looks very Asian because of her heritage, and grew up with a bicultural exposure. Shes smart as nails. Amy is convinced that Amy doesnt have a soul and was born with the brain of a boy. Shell deny the former point if you ask her, but shes happy to say so herself.

she literally slipt on a banana peel in one episode
in the christmas episode the metal walls go up while she is hanging decorations throwing her off the roof
when zoidberd gets horny she is the one who gets beaten up
start paying attention to her in the background and you will notice a lot of moments like that

she is also the ditzy character she doesnt have just 1 trait

I think it's funny that they went with it in the beginning before they retconned her into being rich and daughter of a rich family, which would make more sense for the Professor to keep her around to get grant funding from her/her parents somehow for his crazy experiments
