It's not even about being more attractive. Karen was really cool and he just straight up left her in New York. And she wasn't some stereotypical "evil girlfriend" like in cliche romcoms or romcom plotlines in shows. She was fun to be around, had a great sense of humor, and was just likable all around.

Which makes it all the more poignant when Jim does leave her for Pam, but they may not have anticipated that there would a huge fan base for Karen.

And then she turned around and made Jim quit his new company and dream job because she was stuck at home with the kids and jealous, instead of trusting him to succeed. Oh and I almost forgot that time she lied to her new boss to give herself a better job title and raise, neither of which existed without the lie.
Seems like a very selfish person.

Yeah in the final episode where it's like a "meet the cast Q&A" right? That was a neat episode, and gives hope that Pam the character would become a better person. But overall she seems like someone I wouldn't want in my life.
