I really wanted to like this one.

The original two reviews I watch every year. I think the funniest Nerd moment ever is when he clones himself in the dream and they're all complaining about the game at the same time.

Pretty weak episode here though. The toys looked bad in action. Nothing interesting about the games other than that instruction manual. It seemed like a rushed ending too.

I know it's parody, but it bugs me that he brought back Freddy and Jason only to defeat them in such an easy manner.

Same here. It did feel like an old episode where it's just James and the nerd room mixed with some rants and cheesy effects.

A bit hit-or-miss this time. He can still bring it when he really wants to, like last episode, but I felt a bit of phoning in mixed in with the good stuff.

The difference between modern and classic reviews of AVGN can be summed up in a single image:



Look at that mix of disgust and entitlement. The Angry Video Game Nerd was a character; an entitled nerd who got mad when things didn't go his way and had hyperbolic reactions to everything. "It's a fact that this is the worst game ever."

Over the past several years, it's more or less been James Rolfe reviewing video games and throwing out AVGN-esque lines about waste and other bodily fluids more or less for continuity's sake. He's no longer playing the part of a gaming Karen who wants to speak to the manager/programmer.

To some extent, a character change had to come.

A 25 year nerd old popping a blood vessel over the game that ruined his weekend when he was a child is funny. A 38 year old going into a rage feels more sad than funny.

Peak AVGN had a shelf life.

Yep. It's kind of worth noting his best recent stuff, like the Earthbound and Majora's Mask videos, pretty much drop the character entirely. I wouldn't mind if AVGN was just an occasional thing and most of his gaming videos were more from his own voice. It seems to be what he'd prefer to do as well, but hey, business is business.

I've been rewatching the Monster Madness episodes for the Halloween season and some of the early reviews feel like he's in-character. When he's talking about some of the lesser Godzilla movies, for example, he appears to be in full AVGN mode.

It seems like he felt at the time that people expected him to be the angry nerd whether he was reviewing video games in-character or reviewing movies as himself.
