The problem is that Direct X wasn't a thing back then, and on the PC side of development hardware-accelerated 3D graphics still weren't standardized. So N64 basically has its own hardware-accelerated 3D graphics framework that was never actually adopted in the PC space, making it kind of an island when it comes to emulation. The 3Dfx Voodoo came out in 1996 but at the time very few PC games supported it and the language it used was never really standardized. The Voodoo 2 came out in 1998 and really set the tone for future cards.
