the Story in LOU2 is good, Im at the part where youre looking for gas in downtown Seattle.

but so far it feels like a slog. Most the time its walking around listening to convos with puzzle solving here and there and sneaking past clickers. Rather boring.

RE: Village puts you right in the meat of the game from the start. More games need to do this.

I haven't played Village yet, but the part you're talking about in TLoU2 is the slowest part in the game.

they're still looking for clues as to where to go, but after that part is over, the game doesn't have any areas as open, and is more linear throughout.

I haven't played since it first came out, but after some more of that area, the game gets more focus, so it ends up being mostly just story and combat.

the open area you're in makes sense in terms of story and characterization, but I could see how it can turn some people off.
