I have both kinds. Can appreciate a good automatic watch, but I have a quartz Tissot that I like because it's just grab and go. I could let it sit for a week and I don't have to adjust anything.

Powered essentially by a quartz crystal. You know those potato batteries you used to make in elementary school? It's like a shittier version of that but enough to make a watch run.

Umm... you're way off the mark (no surprises there). Quartz acts solely as an oscillator when a direct electrical current from a battery is applied to it in order to create a signal that drives a stepper motor that makes the watch tick.

I collect Casios, which I believe are automatic. I dig the geek-chic aesthetic of them and like that they are tough and can be worn in most situations.

I own at least 5 or six of them, including a calculator watch.

Although I don't care for jewelery and find most watches to be gaudy, tacky and over-priced.

automatic.

Why? You don't have to worry about having to change the battery, ever. And the higher end time pieces are usually automatic.
yeah but you have to admit , quartz is better than automatic in telling the time. Easily better, i mean a child's quartz wristwatch is better at telling the time usually than a rolex. And, you only have to change the battery like every 3 yrs. Which you have to admit is not that often.

Can't speak for a Rolex but most automatics need tuning every 3-5 years or so. They will continue to run but won't be as accurate.

Quartz honestly. I respect the watch enthusiast love for other movements, but quartz does the job and I prefer to wear beater watches anyway.

In reality, you no longer need a watch. You can tell the time with your phone, your car, your computer, the TV, etc etc etc. There is like, a 5% chance you'll need to know the time and can't because you don't have a watch.

Watches are now more of a fashion statement, it's basically the one accessory guys can have.
Always has been.

It should be mechanical vs. quartz. Automatic is just half of mechanical. Handwind is still very popular today with certain models.

Automatic for me, definitely. A quartz watch us boring and stale. If I'm gonna wear an accessory, I do want it to be an intricate object with high level craftsmanship.

If its going to be a quartz it has to be Grand Seiko
