For normal content it's true! It takes a LOT for me to notice a DPS is doing poorly. Even when I was generating more single target damage as a Bard tham the Black Mage in my dungeon a few days ago, I can't really tell you why, nor did I care. But when the Tank was under pulling in My Gulg this afternoon, as I was annoyed as all heck.

i definitely notice if pulls are going super slow

these days it's usually lv72+ BLMs that don't realize they're meant to use Flare, and are using exclusively Fire II.

they do about half as much damage as the healer like that, usually. it's pretty noticeable.

It's slightly annoying since you would not expect a skill like Fire 2 to just become completely irrelevant. With the exception of level 1 cure spells, I can't thank of any other example of an ability just becoming straight up irrelevant when it didn't use to be earlier on in the process.

Edit: Okay it's just Blizz 2 now but Freeze also used to be trash. It's extremely good now.

it sort if is. you get aspect mastery much earlier, at least. (letting you switch elements without transposing) i can't remember if there's anything else.

but yeah, leveling BLM is... something. it's not surprising to me that it's by far the class i see people not understanding the most.

So I did do the first dungeon (Sastasha). It was fine. Definitely felt like I was playing with people who had done it before a billion times. No one died or ever got close to dying, and I tried to "lead" as a tank somewhat, but targeting kept messing me up. It feels like the game unintuitively targets a random enemy rather than the closest one. The AoE skill I have also seems to "interrupt" my auto-targeting too.

Also, is there a way to stop targeting players instead of enemies? I'm used to pressing X to target the closest enemy to me, but I'm noticing now that this sometimes doesn't work in big mobs. There were a few times when I just stood there for a few seconds like an idiot because the game had targeted an enemy far away from me or a party member instead of just auto targeting a close enemy. As a tank, it doesn't seem like I'll ever need to target a party member, so it's just annoying having to left directional button until the game randomly decides to target the closest enemy.

After the dungeon ended the game told me to roll for loot, but never actually told me how to do it, so I just left the dungeon.

Instead of going on to the next one immediately, I decided to check out some blue quests. I visited the Gold Saucer. It really hammered home how classic the Gold Saucer theme is. Lots of rpg's /video games in general have carnival music, but they all are just imitations of this one. I wasn't really interested in doing any of the stuff here, but it was fun walking around.

I unlocked the hairdresser. This was important to me, as I had made my original character super boring/basic generic JRPG guy, so I got a little more wild with it. Character customization is overall a bit too limited though.

I did another gladiator quest to get myself to level 21. There was a bit of development about the crime boss subplot. As far as stories go, it's not lighting the world on fire but it's turning into a serviceable narrative.

Use R1 and L1 target enemies instead of X when in combat, it will default to the nearest enemy you're facing and you can keep switching with them if you want to toggle targets. Don't worry about targeting during AoE if you're a Gladiator/Paladin, it's AoE starts with a circle so you don't need to (Maurader/Warrior starts it's AoE with a cone requiring a target and it's annoying).

If you ARE trying to target an ally in combat, which Paladin does have a handful of abilities that can later, you can scroll through your party with up and down on the D-pad, and select a target with X from there.

Just gotta get used to targetting enemies with left right instead of X when picking them up. I only use X to talk wih npcs, not so much in combat. L1+R1 works but only on stuff that's in your enemy list already.

A tip with pulling mob packs, provoke instead of shield lob. Shield lob uses up your gcd so you have to wait to use total eclipse to pick up everything else. Provoke has a much larger range, so you can pull earlier before anyone else is even close to the enemies so the entire group start walking toward you and you have your gcd free to immeadiately use total eclipse.

Typical boss pulling procedure 90% of the time as a Tank is to use your ranged attack while running towards the boss, run directly through them, and turn them around so they're facing away from the party.

Ten more free days left. I'm torn between maximizing my free time remaining and launching into SMTV. I also need to catch up on the 2021 backlog. GOTY season is coming up and I haven't played SMT, YS IX, Scarlet Nexus, Voice of Cards, Metroid Dread or Deathloop yet.

I'll keep plugging away until I have to pay for it I guess. Did more dungeons and got a better feel for it, but R1 / L1 don't work for targeting for me. R1 just switches my cross hotbar and L1... doesn't do anything as far as I can tell.

The tip about provoke instead of shield lob was good though: much appreciated!

Had to wait 20 minutes for the Ul'Dah mines... didn't like that very much!

I would at the very least try to get to the first Primal which is about MSQ level... I think 20 before deciding if you wanna keep playing or not, before the end of your days.

Ideally I'd say after the 2nd Primal at level 30 and the quests immediately after it (which is where the previous version of the free trial ended before they upgraded it) which you could definitely get to, but it depends on how much you play.

Speaking of gear hoarding... I don't get it, lol. I've made an assload of gil selling literally all of my ShB MSQ gear and I suspect I'll do the same with EW. I guess it's probably different for tanks and healers but this is DPS gear I'm selling and there's really never been a case where I felt I needed anything other than poetics gear.

i have full 530 on every job already, but still i'd rather upgrade when its available. i mean the gear drops are free, there's no reason not to use them.

that said, keeping a few levels worth of gear for every role won't fill the armory chest so i'm over-worrying about it. and only the stuff from the lv85 dungeon and up will be better than cryptlurker so that's maximum 3 pieces per role to hold on to.

i mean my armory chest currently has ravel keeper/nabaath/forgiven pieces of healing and maiming ready to go for reaper/sage. i like playing optimally lol

i wouldn't go out of my way for it though, if i'm leveling a job and happen to not get any drops then i just stay in tomestone gear for 10 levels 'cause you're right it doesn't make much of a difference (even as tank)

It won't let me put in any gear no matter it's condition or spirit bond level, whether it's 1 or 100. Literally all I can put in it is a level 50 frying pan.

Do you mean the Armoire?

Armory chest is your equipment inventory.

The Armoire is basically just for seasonal event gear, preorder bonuses, etc. Unique stuff.

like I completed the level 45 and 50 Dragoon quests and got the Drachen Armor and the Wyrm Armor as class armor. I can put that in there and there doesn't seem to be any limit on space, since it's only for specified items anways.

the one thing that makes me sad when they say "we plan to continue to support FFXIV for another 10 years" is that the one benefit to them making a new game would be they could build a bunch of non-outdated systems from the ground up.

inventory, glamours, server stuff like how you just can't send tells to people on other servers or most social stuff doesn't work in instance, etc etc

First I guess "bad" experience in a dungeon so far.

Like... I can't get a handle on this targeting stuff. It just feels like any time new enemies show up I can't get them in time. I played the halitosis dungeon today with the fire creatures and the tiny finy spirits that show up. It's like... how the heck am I supposed to know where they spawn? Anyway someone in chat told me to make sure the enemies target me. Duh. I know that. It's hard. I feel like tank is a t(h)ankless profession.

And then I get in queue to fight what I assume is an Ifrit boss fight. I wait around for about 20 minutes to finally get a join invite. I'm so excited to see it I just accept immediately without realizing... it's halitosis again. The game had left the dungeon "checked" in the duty finder. So I played halitosis again with a new group.

This time the healer died and disappeared for a while. I guess they restarted the dungeon from the beginning? In any case, then I died. We waited for the healer to show up and revive me. I thought about putting something in the chat, but it is so awkward having to press the touch pad twice, then X, then triangle to even get the keyboard to pop up. Then to have to sort through the awful playstation interface. So I just laid there.

Anyway, bottom line is anytime I have to target a "new" thing I get lost in the weeds. Holding R2 and then pressing R1 sometimes helps, except when I forget to press R2 and press R1, which changes the hot bar and REALLY screws me up.

Maybe I'm too old for this

oh, i still make the same mistake with the duty queues. i've had to re-do a dungeon a couple times, including once on patch day when the new trial had just released and i was impatient to get to it asap. sad times.

i'll be honest i'm a bit confused about your targeting issues. maybe i changed some settings that i've forgotten about but i change enemy targets using just the D-pad, left and right. I don't need to hold R2 or press any shoulder buttons at all.

If you look at your enemy list, they have a color icon next to their name. You want them all to be red. That means you are top in aggro for that enemy. You know how up and down on the dpad let's you cycle through your party members? Holding L1 then pressing up or down let's you cycle through the enemy list instead. That way you can precisely select any enemy that is not red.

If new adds show up and they are not on your enemy lost yet, I prefer just running to them and using aoe attacks rather than trying to target them.

I think part of the problem is we've just listed 3 totally different yet viable targeting methods argued by controllers which can get a little confusing.

Like, I could never imagine using the D-pad to target enemies. Sounds like a nightmare.

But everyone is gonna feel different!

If I press left and right, the issue is I have no idea sometimes where the "targeted" enemy actually is, so I just keep pressing left until it "randomly" appears on the closest available enemy. Like it just does NOT want to target the enemy I'm closest to.

Also, I feel like the target doesn't "stay" on the enemy. I will manually target an enemy to do Riot Blade, but my auto-attack is still set to an enemy outside my range. It doesn't shift over to the enemy I just attacked. For a second I thought this was a gameplay mechanic (like I myself am being aggroed) but I also feel like there's something I'm still not getting.

I didn't know about holding L1 and then pressing up and down. I knew/intuited about the colors though, so I'll try that method next.

Holding R2 and then pressing R1/L1 feels super awkward for me and like I said, I mess up sometimes and change the hot bar, which will sometimes result in me opening the character equipment window, which then I have to cancel out of, all in the middle of battle, which is stressful.

yeah, once you target something with the d-pad, whether its using left/right for enemies, up/down for party list, or L+up/down for the aggro list, you have to press X (ps) or A (xbox) to lock that in as your new target, otherwise it just soft-targets them for one skill and resets

i think there are settings in the menu for how the left/right targeting works, i think people mentioned the "cone" thing, so it tries to work left/right from what's on the screen, based on a cone area in front of you? something like that.

yeah, i've never even heard of changing targetings with R2/R1/L1. i can't imagine doing that.

i'm not great at targeting either which is why i play a healer in most games tbh so i can only target party members.

but at some point i guess i got used to it. i just press d-pad left or right a few times and be very responsive to make sure i see the correct enemy light up.

it's not a super big deal because most of the time you are a) in the middle of a group of mobs, in which case all you care about is spamming total eclipse anyway, or b) a boss fight, which usually has a single enemy.

some boss fights have two enemies sometimes, it's pretty rare for a fight to have a million fire sprites like halatali.

And the thing with Hatali as the tank is that you should literally be ignoring those sprites anyways <_<

Not because that's how it was designed, but because gear levels as they are 8 years later have trivialized the damage of the room wide AoE from those sprites so much that even the most pathetic healer can heal through it.
