Favorite mainline MGS game

Just curious. Replaying the series(along with Silent Hill and Resident Evil) and surprised how much I'm enjoying the PSX titles(mostly on PSP)

MGS changed the game, it was the first giant success to bring cinematic style to the game, and was amazingly fun over 20 years later. Bit short once you know what to do though.

MGS2, gameplay and mechanics wise, is years ahead of every other title of its time. It's also utter madness story wise, though the plot can be great. A decent chunk longer even when knowing what to do than the first title helps as well, and Substance gives a lot of great content.

MGS3 was my favorite for a long time, but ends up being a rehash in some ways, with less compelling villains outside of Ocelot, Volgin, and the Boss. The story is probably the best of all in some ways, and has great voice acting.

MGS4 is a movie disguising itself as a game. There are 5 playable sections and 2 of them are almost a joke. Only the first and shadow moses revisited really count as a game to me. Again, great gameplay that you don't even get to use or experience if you just burn through...

Peace Walker has a solid story, characters, and is really only held back by being a PSP title. Kojima said he should have called it MGS5.

Twin Snakes is a remake that was unique at the time, but replaying I didn't have near the fun I did with my replay of the OG and that was on GC hardware with the discs. Shame.

MGS5 was new, fresh, and open in a way the games had never been before. The story wasn't as coherent, the plot never resolves because the game wasn't finished, and there is a huge gap left. Still, the gameplay is awesome and closer to real stealth than the series has ever been, though that may not be the best thing considering that wasn't necessarily its intent.

Whatcha got CE? what's your vote and reason?

Dai Grepher: I was wrong. My entire theory is incorrect. Zero Mission IS a remake of Metroid.

My only knock is we don't get enough foreshadowing of the villains and the food aspect becomes irrelevant... and the fact that the boss fight makes no sense with the CQC. 'Remembering the basics' does not prep us in any way for that insane fight

probably Metal Gear Solid 4.

I used to really dislike it, but during a third playthrough, something just "clicked", for me.

it's weird, because if I'm making a top games list, I'd put Metal Gear Solid 3 instead, but MGS4 feels like the most Metal Gear game, if that makes sense, IMO.

3 for sure closely followed by second. Snake Eater hits an emotional high point that nothing else in the series comes close to.
