I just always assumed that mythical Pokemon were just a rarer type of legendary Pokemon. Like I always thought that all mythicals were legendary but not all legendaries are mythical. But apparently this isn't the case???

There are 59 legendary pokemon, but only 21 mythical Pokemon, so you're not wrong in that mythical is rarer than legendary.

Maybe Legendary are just really famous, rare Pokemon and Mythical are only "speculated" to exist?

Mythicals are legendary considering they are stronger, have stronger moves, and can usually learn more moves than regular Pokemon. However they can usually only be gotten from special events. Maybe in the future they'll be put into some games so they'll be more accessible for newer players. IMO just consider mythicals a side category of legendary.

Mythical and legendary aren't the same. One is standard game content, the other is from events. They have the same idea going on, but the distinction is explicit.
