"Oh, what, you speak English but still defer to the t/v distinction? God we got rid of that so long ago." I barely remember French but I definitely use those dumbass pronouns.

Two languages means thinking in two languages. Of course someone on CE thinks thinking is a bad thing.

For anyone in Canada who grew up with E/F, enjoy your cushy $60k-a-year-to-start Gub'mint job. Lifetime pension after 10 years! And you don't even have to do much! Just sit around and get fat and answer the phone!

Tu/vous?
That's just what it is in French. I think in Latin it's tu/Vos or whatever.

Tu is just 'you' while 'vous' is 'you' for fancy people/higher status. Or whatever however it works.

"Voulez vous couche avec moi"
"Veux tu couches avec moi"

The first one implies more respect. Most languages have something like that

Multilingualism is historically and globally the norm. Monolingualism is an aberration particularly obsessed over by anglophones

Yeah but just the fact someone can imply this distinction in a sociolinguistic way, while speaking a language where people don't use it, is frustrating.

This problem is probably imaginary but it makes sense to me.

Yeah, I guess I thought it was a status thing but this also makes sense. I think it's meant for formality in general.

If I had kids they would be trilingual by necessity (Japanese for daily life, Chinese for communicating with family, English for interacting with much of the rest of the world).

I definitely plan on raising mine at least bilingual. English, German, whatever the moms languages are if anything else. Also quite fond of dual (or tri) immersion schools

It's also funny that my English comprehension prevents me from identifying the implication of respect without a clear clue.

Again this is merely an imaginary issue that I would have to convince people is true.

You are studying German yourself, right? Can I ask why? Do you live there, or do you have German ancestry or whatever, or are you just interested in that particular language?

The assumption is if I had kids I would still live in Japan. It would be impossible for them not to learn Japanese even if we didn't use it at home. My wife and I already use Japanese as our default language to communicate rather than Chinese or English.

I just love it lol. I have some friends from there which is what got me learning it, and I fell in love with the language. I do have a little bit of German (via great-grandma) but not much. Mostly Danish, Scottish, English.

I'd also like my kids to speak Danish since my grandma never passed it on to my mom's generation, but Idk if i'll speak it by then so who knows.

Yeah it's a pretty cool language. I live pretty close to the Belgian-German border, and the Dutch (Flemish)

dialect here sounds almost the same as German. Me and my grandparents used to visit friends of theirs right across the border in Germany, and my grandparents would talk to them in their dialect, while their friends would speak German. They understood each other perfectly. I thought that was so cool, it made me wanna learn it.
And it sounds so good as well.

Danish is another language I would like to learn someday, and Russian as well.

Yeah it's really neat how (in many parts of the world) languages and dialects are closer to each other on the borders where they come into contact (since most of the borders are fairly recent and largely invisible anyways)
