Did Lance beat Red?

In RBY, Green beat Lance then Red beat Green.

Prior to (or during the events of) GSC, Lance trained harder against the gym leaders (including Green) then defeated Red for the champion title. Red left to Mount Silver to train where he is defeated once more by Gold.

Yeah, I always assumed Red just didn't want to be the Champion and left to journey. Lance just took his place back.

Green in the games is the girl, Blue is Oaks grandson. The Lets Go games reaffirm that. In the manga its the reverse.

Technically, both is true.

Green is the JP name for the rival, but his ENG name is Blue. Same goes for the Adventures manga (even when they get to the FRLG arc where it doesn't make sense for it to be the case). While the girl is Blue in JP and Green in ENG.

So it's the same as everyone else having different names in Japanese and English, like Brock being Takeshi and so on. Only in this case, both the names are English colors.

I figure if stepping down from champion role was actually a thing, then Green should be the champion instead of Lance. This further leads me to believe Lance came back and won the champion title at a later date.

Green probably didnt want to be a hand-me-down champion after his rival quit. Plus he was already established as a gym leader. These factors make it easy to see why Green didnt want to be a champion after Red stepped down. Therefore, Lance took the spot left by Red and Green.

* Red willingly gave up the title of Champion to continue his journey and was never defeated for it.

* Blue/Green/Gary/whatever had already gotten settled in as the new Viridian gym leader and didn't feel like leaving that post to try and become Champion again. That or he's paranoid that Red will show up right after he wins again just to screw with him.

* Lance, as the leader of the Elite Four and therefore the closest to the claim, became Champion by default after Red left and Blue/Green/Gary/whatever chose not to come back.

That's how I see it.
